One month until Topaz opens it's 2008 trout season. I have a question. The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) shows that after the lake closed last year that in the month of October they stocked 25,000 7-10 inch trout. This year from the lake closing until the end of November no trout have been stocked. What's the story? Will this effect the fishing?

Where are you getting your info captain?
http://www.ndow.org/fish/stocking/west.shtm
This shows something in line with what your saying but I don't see 70K last October. *I don't know what it means, we'll have to wait and see but those fish planted last year wouldn't be ready till this year. According to the NDOW page 30k of those were 3". Most of those ended up as food anyway. ::)

25,000 as I said.

10,449 on 10/04/06
9,450 *on 10/04/06
5,021 on 10/05/06
Also noted 32,777 3 inchers on 12/14/06.

I suspect that many of thise nice fish caught in January were those stocked in October. There is also the possibility that NDOW us not reporting all the fish they stock on their web page.

Yeah my eyes must be failing me but the point remains that those fish only grow about .5 inches per month so I would rather wait a year to catch them. *No hatchery gullibles in this lake. *They might be tough at times but when you get them they're worth it.

Those would be throw backs(12inchers) if they weren't injured. Any quality fish of 16" or more have been in that water a lot longer than three months.

What ever is there I'm sure home they are hungry. Here is a picture of two trout I caught in late March. I kept them because they were the first trout I caught in Nevada in over 30 years. They may have belonged to that October class. They were tasty.

Those are some of the best eating trout you will find. *Only Eagle Lake and Tahoe trout taste as good to me.
This brute was well into his second year in the lake.

I've noticed through the years that the NDOW site isn't always updated as well as it could be. They don't have a huge budget. We won't know until Jan 1.

Boats almost ready to go!

Actually after I wrote this I looked and they stocked a bunch or rainbows and cuttbows in Sept and Aug respectively.

They drew down the lake pretty good, so those trout are concentrated. Hunger is the rule and there was alot of food in there too. They are probably growing like a Eagle Laker right now as we speak. See ya all out there......Jetspray

I suspect that a mistake was made. The NDOW stocking page shows them stocking Squaw Creek Reservoir with 28,356 2.6 inch Rainbow Trout on 11/8/07. The question is why so many trout in a small remote 47 acre lake? I suspect that those trout actually went into Topaz.

You must be correct Captain there is no way they would put that many into that little reservoir. *They had already put some ten thousand catchables in earlier. *Can't wait to go buy my new non-resident California license. *Last year it was 112.50 with a two-rod stamp. *What are the odds it won't go up? ::) ;D The fish can be quite tempermental at Topaz in January. Historically I usually have a good day on New Year's day and then it get's a little hit and miss for the cold winter months. Last year the hottest bait I saw was a small crawler with a marshmallow. Trolling small minnow imitations and flies should fool a few. Tip-I went trolling with Docstressor last year and he was getting hits on a regular basis using an tui-chub imitation fly while I fished flashers and worms and never got a hit. Trolling usually gets going in late March and April when it warms the water up a little and some of the best fishing can be in late Spring but then you have to contend with the ski lice and it's just not worth it

You can use either license as you know and I usually don't buy a Nevada because I only fish in Nevada sporadically and I can buy a daily. I do 99.9% of my trout fishing in California. The irony is that California doesn't even stock Topaz anymore. So I pay California to catch Nevada fish! ::) ;D

Nevada will keep stocking Topaz vigorously because it keeps those Californians in Topaz lodge. After a fun day of fishing they lose a few bucks in the Casino and that helps our tax base. ;)

Because I still claim residency in California I have a California Residence licence and an out of state licence for Nevada so I'm not forced to get a new Cal License on Jan 1.

I fished in the Park a couple of times and had to pay $5 a trip. I got smart and parked off the road just before the enterence and walked down.

I like fishing in the park and sometimes it can be very good over there in the winter. I can't recall exactly but the daily fee will go up this year to $6.00 or so. Not bad for day use when compared with other places. ;)

Can I use my CA license to fish any part of Topaz? And how is the shore fishing there?

LOL, maybe I should bring the boat as well. Do you need downriggers on the boat to fish there? Or, can I use my jigs there?

Nevada stocking might be due to the fish hatchery being just
out of Grdnerville ??

Don't know where the closes Calif water hole is.......?

The lake isn't all that deep and at the first of the year the fish should be right on top. Jigs should work. I'll be throwing worms and Power Bait. Maybe a Kastmaster or 2.

The lake is about 80' deep depending on the water level but during the winter and Spring top-lining is the way. ;)

The hatchery in GV is a federal hatchery for Lahontan Cutts and most of the Fish go to Pyramid. The closest Nevada hatchery is in Mason Valley.

California used to stock it regularly from the hatchery in Mammoth lakes but they quit when all their supposed budget woes began about ten years ago! ::) *Topaz gets their fish from Mason Valley since all the Gardnerville Cutts go to Walker lake.

From what I understand it the rate is for folks who live in Douglas County. I tried to get it in the spring. I had lived in the County for 2 months but because I still had California plates the ranger said I wasn't a Nevada resident.
