With the promise of snow this evening, we made what could be our last trip to the New Spicer Meadow Reservoir, on Sunday. Located just a couples miles below Bear Valley Ski Resort at 6500 ft elevation, this is my favorite lake to fish in the fall, hands down. Four of us squeezed into my little 69 Chrylser Sport Satelite, along for the outing were the usual cronies, Guy, Sleepy, and Evan.
The fish were a little harder to find, but once we found them, the fishing was steady unitl around 3 pm, when the bite just turned off. They were all around the same size as always, 14-15 inches and about 3/4 lbs. We were surprised to boat 2 Koknaee's.

Guy with one of his....

Evan's fish, before release.

Sleepy stares at the trees, that usually are an island. that entire rocky peninsula is usually under water. Guy was busy mapping structure on the GPS, for trips in the spring when the water is back to normal, Or will it be a dry year?

It was pretty brisk up there, and a steady wind was blowing up the canyon. The launch area was more chewed up then at any other times in the past; and was a bit soft and muddy. Don't try it unless you have four wheel drive!

Yes I have to agree with you Steveo Spicer is one of my favorite lakes along with Caples. I have always got fish from Spicer Lake in the fall and haven't gotton skunked yet. Maybe I better knock on some wood.

The day started out really slow...trolled the usual spots, marked the usual fish, got a lot of short strikes, but no takers. We tried a spot I had never fished before. Bingo..
But, I have to be honest.....Guy, and the others caught limits... I caught one. ONE. I drove, and relayed pertinent info to Guy..."How fast are we going?" "How deep are we".
I had a chance early in the day, but then Evan fished, and I was happy just to moan and groan, about having to drive. Ha ha! ;)

I went shore fishing there a month ago and found great rainbow action, catching a limit of gorgeous fish. I love Spicer. Unfortuately, I wasn't able to go over to Union Reservoir to catch a bunch of trout and brown bullhead catfish.

How big do the fish get at Spicer?. Iv'e caught them in 12-15 inch range.Dont get me wrong, I enjoy catching them. Just curious if there's any big one's.

Personally I have never caught any over a pound(buddy caught a 1 3/4)-but the lake is still young and I think there is plenty of potental for it to eventually produce hammers down the road since the majority of fish planted are fingerlings and big fish like little fish.More importantly I think though is the quality of the fish that come out of there-not big,but good looking and good tasting :)

how are those catfish at union?-I've yet to get any..I assume they have to be tasty...whats the average size?
