Got a new rod yesterday so I had to try it out. Back to Red this morning. Arrived a little after 7 AM and fished to 10:15. Fished the area around the Southeast corner of the dam. Using my trusty 1/4 oz gold Kastmaster I C&R 8 Brookies. Sorry no Cutts today. :'( Another Sniffer, Cgagex3, was also there with his inflatable. He was catching only Brookies as well. The weather was clear with little wind but it was very cold. I had to remove ice from my guides before almost every cast. When I was leaving Cgagex3 was leaving as well. He said he was going to try Caples. Hopefully he'll tell us how he did.

Well I got to Red this morning at 7:20 and found a lone sniffer braving the cold *[smiley=smiley_crazy.gif]
http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/8894/pic015yq0.jpgand I do mean cold ( I think my toes are still frozen from the water).
Nice to finally meet you in person Capt. (that's him down there on shore)
I think the Capt had 7 on when he left and I had 6, kept 2 for cooking tomorrow. All brooks nothing like the beauty cutt Capt caught yesterday. The only other boat (pontoon) on the water caught the lone cutt for the day.
I went back by Caples but the solid gale force winds made me re-think that idea. I headed back towards home but got sucked in to Bear River. The water has dropped a good 4 or 5 ft in the last couple of weeks.

What a difference a few miles make. I had to strip off the top half of my waders and my jacket for Bear. Still 6000 ft but it felt like 20 degrees warmer.
Fished for 2 hrs and caught 4 fish, 3 smallish brown and 1 bow. Had to keep 1 brown, the little guy hit me so hard his eyeball popped out from the hook.
All in all a great day. Probably my last trip over the summit till Father's Day 2008 at Ice out.
By the way when I pulled out at Red there was about 6" of ice stuck to the shore in the corner bacause the sun just doesn't shine there. The freeze is comin soon.

Capt,
What kind of rod did you get? Curious since you do a lot of bank fishing in the same areas that I do.
Cheers,
Salvage

Nice to meet you CG. I suspect that there is 2 weeks left for Red. I'll go there a couple of times more looking for that 24" Cutt.

I got a 6 1/2 foot fairly stiff spin rod made by Penn. I'm not sure of the model number but I got it ar Big 5 and it cost $16.99. I use lures a lot and I need the legnth and stiffness to set the hook on fish after a long cast. Nothing fancy but it worked well for me today.

Much clearer then even last week. There was some scum at the Northeast corner of the dam but the wind was holding it in place.

Is this the Red Lake on 88 just past the Park Service and Ranger Station?
I've hiked up to Winnemuca but never tried that Red Lake.

I would be honored to. Some time before the 21st because I'm going to LA to spend Turkey day with the kids. If not Red perhaps Caples or ICR.
