View Full Version : Thermalito Afterbay Landlocked Steelhead Report

Had a couple of hours of sunlight left after work today, so headed out to the Thermalito Afterbay (in Oroville) to check out the hatchery-planted landlocked steelhead action. *Within 5 minutes after launching, I nailed this 17" female on an olive woolly-bugger. *At first I thought I had hooked a largemouth since the fish was staying on the bottom and was fighting like crazy. ;D

A few minutes later, 1 had a LDR. :'(
But then, I hooked another 17", even fatter steelhead (which I released)...

This fish (#3) jumped clear out of the water (in true steelhead style) 5 times! :)

I hooked 1 more (fish #4), and lost it right at the boat. *Water temp was 56 degrees. *I was fishing in 6-12 feet of water, about 2-3 feet under the surface. *Can't wait to BBQ her! :P

Each of the Landlocked out of the Afterbay I have caught have been delicious. Where about were you trolling? North or south of 162? PM if you want. I am shore bound and always looking for places to try and soak. But recently the water has been WAY down even in the afterbay, while the forebay today was fuller than I have seen it in awhile, caught 4 Planter RBows.

Anyway good catching and enjoy.

Forgot to mention that the fish I kept had 2 NICE skeins of roe! :o * The meat looked really nice (as did the eggs). *I believe she also had 2 partially digested minnows(?) inside her stomach. *I launched (and fished) by the Wilbur Road launch area. *TeleComCal, as you mentioned, the water has been really low (where isn't it nowadays?). *I was thinking you might be able to wade out through the mud, as long as you don't sink down, to get a better fishing spot away from the launch area. *
Good luck...
