Fished Melones today from 7:am til 1:00pm at one of the cove in Tuttletown area.

C&R several dinks and mostly male on my favorite lure.
Caught 2 nice rainbow and kept 1 dink that was not going to make it.
Melones still have lots of BIG FISH and they are in sponing mode.If you want to catch some fish, just fish the cove in clam water and fish slow.

Around 5 my pole slams over and i had a fiesty 22" 4lb bow.He made a few nice runs making the reael scream, and goin airborne a couple times. The magic bait was glitter P.B.That was the only bite in the hour we were there.Goin back tomorrow hopefully for our limits.

well .. aside from it being so completely numbing cold that my rod tip iced over more than once, very atypical for California...at least for the 32 years I was born and raised up here , its something I have never seen in this neck of the woods

Snoose,
I know Tortuga thought about goin' out on Sat. But, I did not want to brave the cold weather...temps have been in the low teens in the early am at our house, yours too, i suppose. Sun. he had to go to SAC for a few days, i thought about some bank fishing today, but decided against it...it's still too cold! [smiley=cold.gif] [smiley=cold.gif]
Sorry, the skunk came aboard. [smiley=cry.gif]

I was one of the crazy retards to troll the lake saturday morning. It was pretty slow all morning. Then in the early afternoon the bite picked up and when it was all said and done I landed 11 fish. Unfortunaely, I waited all day for Big bertha to hit, but she never did. All the fish were small planters. I spent all my time up the river rolling shad. I used downfiggers from the top to 50 feet. They were not concentrated in a cedrtain depth, but scattered. Nice day once the sun came up.

Hey guys sorry for the late report. Fished melones for the first time on Sun. I took my kids out there with me so we didn't get to the lake until after 12pm it was to cold to drag three little ones out there at 6 in the morning. when we got there I saw several fish surface in a shallow cove near one of the launch ramps I think near the glory hole boat launch. I read in a proir post that the fish were in spawn mode and shallow so this cove made sense. Green glitter power bait with trout gravey scents in natural and anise mixed together got all the bites. We only fished for about 3 hrs. because of the cold but with 2 poles out we got 5 fish 1 was about 10" but the rest were BIG. I didn't have a tape measure except for the one on my cooler and that only went up to a mesaly 21" all 4 were over that the biggest by at least 2-3" great day out there and I'll be going back for more real soon.

Boy I love hearing about the family at the lake!!! Seems like all winter we've been catching some kind of trout most of the time. What a great place to take the kids, maybe watch some Eagles, catch some fish, and look at the beauty around you. Add in some of the bright colored rainbows and WOW! Congrats on some nice fish and congrats to the family for helping out! (or for letting you help out)

Fished Angles Creek arm of Melones today with my son and boated 3 fish and had 1 SDR. All decent size at 12", 13" and 14" and were high quality holdovers. But nothing approaching the 19"er I caught last month. * * *
*
All were caught trolling flies that were my own ties of olive and black woolly buggers. First time I've caught trout with my own tie and these patterns proved to be deadly. I will definately be making more of those colors. * * *
*
Fished from 9am-2:30pm, but all fish and bites came between 11am-1pm. *

That Angles Creek arm is becoming productive for you isn't it?

What line were you using this time? Any flash on the buggers?

You should check out Pedro some time !! Lots of surface action going on !!!

Fished Melones today from 1:00 to 3:00pm , just tossing my favorite lure
and did not use bait at all.Wanted to see if I can catch a big one on lure.

I have always caught dinks on lures of the bank and never catch anything over 13''.
Finally caught a nice 3# on lure today *;D and it was the only fish. :(

Saw a bald eagle dove in and caught one of those little duck and flew off,man what a sight.

Target the shallow water near the Spillway. I allways hearing of Browns being caught in that area (More likely in spring time) But it's worth a try .

RonG,

Launch at Gloryhole, and head strait up river. Parrot's Ferry Bridge and work your way back. Try with rolled shad, tight to the banks, and keep one line15-30 ft deep with a long set back. Looking forward to your report. I need to fish Melones again, my focus as of late has been Pedro. Hope's this helps. Fishon18

[smiley=baghead.gif] Thats why we don't have more pics. She also didn't brag enough. I mean the girl was on fire!!! She caught 5 of those trout in an hour! I mean we couldn't keep that wedding ring in the water. When that big one hit it was like rrrreeeeeerrrrreeeeeee that clicker was whining it was stripping line so fast. She fought it like a master!! [smiley=fencing.gif] Nothing fazed her. In the morning she broke off a leader (a really old leader I didn't change!!!!) and had to change lures. It didn't even slow her down. She still caught fish one after the other. I however have become a master netter...we're all good at something [smiley=rotfl2.gif].

Izonker and I got out today for two semi dinks and a ride in the rain

The day started off by cresting a hill on the way into melones to find someone parked in the road looking to see if he can get down the bank. Slam on the brakes to keep from hitting him and the ice chest flies out of the boat and empties all over the road.
Oh well , I guess some folks get in the country and figure they can stop anywhere.

Great report guys! Looks like trolling between the bridges is starting to be productive. Anyone rolling shad?

I fished Melones all day and night Sat. Though I did catch a fair amount of fish, nothing was of any size and not even one holdover. I had to keep one 14" trout because it was bleeding. I sprinkled it with spices, wrapped it with bacon and put it on the campfire grill. It was really hard to spit out! I was gonna christen my new boat I got from kokemachine but I left it at home this trip. I camped in the walk-in sites and fished Angles Cove exclusively with worms. The panfish wouldn't leave my worms alone.

Froggie / Tortuga - Those fish are sa-weeee-t!

The Koke bite ,if we are fortunate this year, will start sometime in April, like it did in 2005.last year,it didn't get started until May.so in all likely hood, look for May has being the start of Koke fishing(catchin) at Melones and Pedro. in mid March, come up to the Calavares County Fairgrounds,to the "Glory Ho;e Sports" seminars om that Saturday, and come see all the pros talking about Trout,Bass, and Kokanee fishing.it's a great event!! i will be there, working the Shasta Tackle Booth, you can ask me,or any of the guides questions you may have.

Yep, I have attended both the seminars and the on-the-water events. I highly recommend it. You can get out of it whatever you want. The on-the-water events are $25 for a two-hour tour. Last year my son and I went with a bass pro. The weather was really nasty that day and our two-hours was from 8-10am. When we returned to the dock, the people who had the 10-12 slot backed out. So he took my son and I out for another two hours (free). The year before last we went with a trout/koke guide.

Fishin' Dan was the guide. I think he is reather well known. A neighbor of mine had gone out with him and so the next year I requested him. The bass pro I went out with last year was Mike Smiley (sp?). He was excellent as well.

All of the guides that I've talked to at the seminar have been great. Yes Danny Lane is a great guide and is also a nice guy, always willing to give some friendly advice. Vance and Gary Morales, and Danny, and a bunch of others pretty much donate their time for all of this. The $25 really is not profit...it about covers gas and food for those guys. Melanie at Glory Hole really works hard to make it a QUALITY event and you can learn as much as you want.

Koke season started later last year, probably early May...2006 was our best koke season ever @ Melones. I firmly believe it was from our attending a few of Melanie's seminars at Glory Hole. Anyone else ever notice how Melanie & Melones are so similar ? No wonder she does such a good job in helping us fisherpeople do well on that lake.

Was a great evening on the water then !!!! 8-)

Just got home from a couple of days at New Melones. Thurs we fished about 3 hours and picked up 4 Rainbows, 2 for hammer both around 14"s and 2 for me ;) My first one weighed 4lbs on the nose, and my second one weighted 3lbs 13oz. Both really nice fish and both were bleeding after a great fight on light tackle. Thurs we launched in the fog and headed way up past the second bridge and started trolling back, after over two hours we only had one Rainbow to show for it. Headed back to where the fish were caught the day before (middle of the lake) and trolled for another 4 hours for five fish total. All 12-14"s :) So 6 hours of fishing and changing lures for 5 fish. Sure thought we'd catch another big one but it didn't happen. The best lure for us was a gold and green criplure, no dodger. All fish were caught above 30' deep on the riggers. We trolled 2+mph and about 80-100' back. One of the big ones came on a small Lyman frog pattern. Only saw a few other boats out there for the 2 days, no answer on channel 69 :-/ I have a pic of the 2 bigger fish, have to find a picture poster for me :)

Thanks for posted that for me MM ;) I've been taught to post by the best, but no one has showed me how to do it without jumping through hoops and taking all day just to post one pic'. It would take me over an hour, MM did it in 2 minutes ::) They were nice fish, and both put up great fights :D The bigger of the two came out of the water twice and took some impressive runs before he found the net ;) he also rolled himself up the line many times, if you look close you can see the line marks :) it's the fish on the left ;)

Mickey,

Great job. You seem to do better when your not looking to follow me around. This proves I should follow you. Where at on the lake? Many boats out?
