I went fishing at Los Vaqueros yesterday. Calaveras Trout Farm just planted 1200 lbs of trout on 5 Jan. The weather was cool and fairly windy. It gave me my first chance to use my Hummingbird Smartcast fish finder I got as a Christmas present from my wife. I loved it. It worked just as advertised. It provided me with depth, water temp (54 degrees), bottom topography and located fish swimming near the rock wall. I actually changed spots after the fishfinder said the water depth was only 6 feet with no structure. As a shore fisherman, I truly enjoyed having this new tool at my disposal.

Within my first half an hour, I hooked into a two pound trout. Fought like hell on my ultralight rod. I was using Berkeley gulp natural worms and a cheese marshmellow. I had two more strong strikes but I couldn't put down my casting rod fast enough to set the hook.

I didn't get a single strike fishing with my lures. I tried everything from a Kastmaster to a chartrouse Rooster Tail to a Mepps Black Fury...nothing. The water near the shore was murky due to the waves. All in all it was a great day. I finally had success baitfishing at this reservior.

My buddy went fishing at New Melones over the weekend with his two boys. His oldest boy caught a 5 pound trout using a collapsable backpacking rod with powerbait from the shore at Angels Cove.

I cant use the search for the life of me but many float tubers did a thread about this line of castable fish finders a month or two ago and it would be beneficial.

Thanks for the report Buck ,glad that smartcast worked out. Sure is nice knowing if your only fishing in 6' of water with no fish.

Was there much fishing pressure up there?
