Had an awsome day, fished from 7:00am til 1:00pm with my buddy
and caught our limits. C&R over 10 fish *and most were caught on lures
the two big on was on power bait. ;D
We can see school of fish chasing our lure and hit right at the end of our retrieve.
Get out there if you can fish are bitting,no need for a boat just bank it.

Nice fish! You are right about not needing a boat. I went out from 8:00-1:00 trolling ang caught 8 planters but nothing big. I was toplining and missed a bunch of hits but even the ones I missed were pretty small.
Bank or still fishing from a boat seems like the best chance to get a big one right now.

Nice fish. I guess from the reports I'm reading the bank fisher's are smoking the boat trollers.
I would have to guess the big fish are cruising the shallows close to the bank, or are using the first drop off to feed on...... Anyway nice catch!!

I'm thinking of trying Melones for the first time on New Years Day because, umm, that's when my wife will let me.

Any veterans know what the crowds will be like?

Nice fish!!!! *We are headed up there in the morning with a boat. *Any recommendations for either trolling or anchoring and bait fishing? *Any info would be appreciated, we are just trying to learn the lake.

Fish shallow points and flats about 5' to 10' of water.

You might want to bank it at Angels Cove or the Tuttletown Parking lot (Tuttletown's lot is half in the waters...) You can park at the waters edge and fish from the car.

If anyone is going out to try the bank I would reccomend tuttletown. I fished angels cove sunday from 1pm until sundown for a smaller sized bass"that went back". fished both worms and Power bait. The only other fish that I heard of was a small planter. It was a very nice day,If I could of gotten an earlyer start I would have brought the boat.

Howdy fellas,
What fishing methods work from shore at this lake? I've been there before but only to mountain bike,
Cheers,

Use power bait and toss your favorite lures.

Make sure fish shallow points and flats in the main lake.

Does anyone know what time the lake is open to park? Where in Tuttletown is the best spot to fish?

FNG the lake site says open at 4 am.
As a Caples / Woods / Red lake regular I have to find somewhere new till June. I love Caples for the Macs, Red for the Cuts and Woods for the solitude (read as very few fish).
Thaifisher you have convinced me to give Melones a try. I figure if I can drive 90 miles to Caples then I can go 65 to Melones. Your pics have inspired. Seco the last few trips isn't working. Of course the 10 minute drive from Galt is nice.
I plan on Saturday and if that goes well then again somewhere between Tuesday & Thursday next week as my work schedule allows. Only 7 working days left in the year and 10 vacation days left to use. Wouldn't it figure that Thursday this week would be the best for my schedule , and the only day of rain in the forcast.
Look for the Yellow pontoon and give a yell.
