View Full Version : Another Tahoe Hookjaw (PIC)

03-24-2006, 09:10 PM
I did another solo trip this afternoon (Fri., Mar 24), this time on the West shore between Emerald Bay and Rubicon Pt. *Right after sunset I was pulling an 8" AC PLUG skinny in rainbow pattern when this bad boy hit:

Here is a close-up of his ugly mug:

A true Hookjaw! He took about 15 minutes to get to the boat, then after a couple of quick pics it was back to the frigid water. The Boga grip said he was in the 7 lb. range. By the way, I really enjoy catching gnarly old fish on handmade lures that don't look like fancy factory jobs!! I'm going to keep pulling those AC PLUGS, 'cause I'm targeting a 10# fish!

Great job, I like the solo. It's quite and you own the fish. So, I do believe in the not off the shelf lures. I have heavily worked the Lymans in Pyramid and a few times in Tahoe and they work. Have you tried Lymans?

03-24-2006, 09:20 PM
Haven't tried Lymans, are they like J-Plugs?

Congrats Jeff, another nice hookjaw. Yeah those AC's may be ugly, but there is no doubt they work. Glad we could get out today, two more storms on the way.

Another great fish jeff! Those ac's are paying off big time ;)

Nice Brownie Jeff ;) Were you using that Seaguar Fluoro leader? I'll take a 7lb brown nightcap anytime ;)

TJ at it again!

Nice fish Jeff.

Thanks guys!
Sierra_hillbilly: I didn't measure his length just weighed him. But I would guess in the high 20s. He was a little longer and leaner that the last hookjaw.
HighSierra_Drifter: I didn't get a chance to put the Seaguar on yet, but thanks for getting it to me so fast!
Empire: You are going to have to come up again, when you get a chance.

Empire: You are going to have to come up again, when you get a chance.

You set a date, I will be there.

Hello from Lake Tahoe, man I can't believe two, 7 pound browns came from the same general area in Tahoe in one day! We must have just missed you. John (Sierra Skier)also caught and released a 7 pounder (check the mack board 3-24) and I got a 9 pound mack! Great fish again Jeff! Good Luck, Eric :)

Great fish Jeff. I wish I could fish Tahoe but I got a 2-stroke on my little rig. Sjsharks and I were talking at the Amador ramp the other day . He was mentioning how he would like to trade you a trip to Amador for a Trip to Tahoe so he could learn from a guy that knew what he was doing. I also have run into Empire a few times on Folsom with his kids. Very nice guy.
Maybe we could set something up where we had a mini-fest. I thnk Sj's ride is Tahoe worthy. I'll buy the steak and we can throw some of those fish on the grill too. ;)
Anyhow great fish, keep up the good work. :)
Sniffers Rule! ;D

We have 2 more storms moving through this week, then its supposed to start warming up. The boat-in campground on Emerald Bay is already mostly snow free. If people are interested in a mini-fest, the weather should start cooperating here pretty quick. Eric and I never saw another boat yesterday, that will change in May, so it might be a good idea to have a fest during April.

Here is my little brown from yesterday,

Nice brownie's guy's

Very nice fish. Have you worked the Zephyr Cove area? A few years back I would catch huge rainbows, browns and lake trout.

03-25-2006, 09:29 PM
Mmmmmmmmmmm...can I have a glass of milk with that brownie? :P
Great fish! I am up for mini-fest but will need a spot in a boat. I got 4X4 Dodge so gettting there isnt a problem ;)

Hello from Lake Tahoe, hey Jeff, you didn't happen to find my K-16 rainbow floating out there? Can you write off lure donations? Eric :)

03-26-2006, 10:36 AM
I didn't find your K-16, 'cause it's hangin' out on the bottom in the rocks with my Rapala deep diver in minnow pattern!

03-26-2006, 11:22 AM
I've read lost about the AC Plugs and will give them a try. Couple of quesitons, though. We're you guys top-lining or using downriggers? How far down?

03-26-2006, 06:39 PM
John and I were toplining blind!!! :o My new/used depth finder wasn't operational! Fortunately John had been down that road before. Three fish caught and released. One fine day, Eric :)

03-26-2006, 09:28 PM
Eric, lets not write-off operator error with your fishfinder. I havent used anything but portables, likely its fine.

Anglin, we generally topline this time of year, just cause its easy and effective. I tried out my new Castaic plugs today and I did use my downrigger, didnt catch anything, but I was downrigging. Emerald Bay has 38F water temp now. I slow trolled dodgers and kwikfish today for 4 macks. I lost the fish I am going for today...darn that thing was fast and big. No browns or bows today...no bows for a couple weeks actually. They must be getting busy.
