Just curious on the type of line and weight people use for trolling trout?

This year I'm trying Cabelas pro line in 6lb test in the camo. What do you use?

I use 4 or 6lb green maxima or vanish...I got some cajun(S/P?) line, but it seems to twist up too often...Really like it in the water though. Anyone else using the red stuff?

Trilene Baby! Never had fresh line break, so no reason to switch.

I long line so I use PowerPro braid in 30 lb test to eliminate the streach. Since I made the switch I miss and loose a lot fewer fish. Be warned though, this stuff tangles into a nasty mess if you happen to cross two or more lines.

10 lb spider fusion line (cheap) or stren braided line, depending on what rod/reel I'm using with 4 lb vanish leader (about 3 ft. long). I'll sometimes use a 6 lb stren flouro leader if I'm at amador, especially if trolling rapalas. It seems they hit those much more viciously.

I go for the Maxima 8lb on my reels with the downriggers. Use it about half the season and change it out. If it starts looking rough, I just strip 50 ft off and continue on. Seems to be the right balance for me, strong enough to hold a big fish, and light enough to give you some play on the small ones.

As we found out, if you nick it, it will break off.

I'm really thinking of trying some new line...i know everyone has there perfernce on type and size that works for them. I would just hate to finally catch that big fish I've been waiting for and it breaks. So thanks for all your post.

For the kids and guest spinning rods 30# Power pro with 125 ft of
6# Maxima green then floro leaders

On my rods 30# power pro with 200ft of 4# Maxima flor leads

On the two downrigger rods 6# Maxima green but might try red on those since they are going deep

Lead core , followed by 50' of 10 Lb Spider Line Supermono ,Black swivel ,Doger , black swivel and 15" 10Lb to luer.

Works well for me.

03-23-2006, 08:38 AM
Like Mr Fisher I use the lead core, it is following by 6lb maxima fluorocarbon about 30 to 40 feet. On my spinning reel it is an 8 lb Stern

03-23-2006, 09:28 AM
Ray ? no leader? Just tie it to the lure huh...... ;D

03-23-2006, 09:36 AM
30 lb Berkley Big game for Rogue River Salmon
8 lb stren for Pyramid (casting lures from shore)
12 P-line for the down riggers with lb leader (downriggers) Pyramid
12lb P-line for American River & Feather River salmon.

03-23-2006, 01:24 PM
10 lb Big Game in green or clear with 3 to 5 ft of leader. Use 6 or 8 lb Vanish or P-line FluoroClear as a leader for most lakes with trout under 7 lbs. At Pyramid use 12 to 15 lb Big Game leader because the cutthroat have tough mouths and don't seem very line shy.. Larry

I see some of you use a really heavy line as a base and then run a normal size line on top. Whats the reason for using 30lb line as backing, rather than just putting all 6,8,10lb line.

03-23-2006, 03:39 PM
Mr Ed, no I use the about 30 to 40 feet of the 6 pound to a swivel, then flashers or dodge about an 18 inch leader to the various lures, needlefish, etc.......but I am in the process of getting downrigger or two and switching over. I want to have that done before the water gets warmer and the fish go deeper. I have a couple of months to figure the whole thing out. It takes me a while, I'm not very bright, I use to be a lot brighter, but right now I am in a slump.

Ironhead - I think I'm going to get the maxima in the 8lb test. After all my research this seems to be the most widely used and from my experience with you, it worked great. Does the maxima use smaller diameter line or is it the normal 8lb test size?

03-24-2006, 07:38 AM
:) trilene xl for mono :)

braid fire line are spiderwire

03-24-2006, 07:58 AM
I have used Trilene 8# for years. I have one rod spoled with "YO-ZURI HYBRID" 4#.I like it a lot. I can't break it.

Hey JoeTech

I'm not sure why others use #30 line but I will tell why I do.

First I use braid and I know it is not going to break on a trout.
The second reason is that briad lasts a lot longer than mono on a spool see I only have to replace the top shot of 125' mono. This makes it easy to change from say 4# line that I use at Amador to 8# I might use on bigger lakes.

But my best reason is if I put 125 feet of mono after the braid I know exactly how far I am when I get to the knot ;) this good to know when top linning.

I use lead core for top fishing down 15-20 feet. But don't use it on my downriggers. Too much of a chance of dragging bottom and you don't know your true depth when on a downrigger. I try to cover shallow and deep when trolling using both. Many times I've heard of reports the fish are on the surface and I end up catching most fish deep. At least in deep waters... Good to have both options in the water. I've been experimenting with different lines trying to find one that works best. Some of what is mentioned above, which also work fine. But now I'm trying 12lb Vanish (gold) not the cheeper vanish stuff and it seems to be working good so far. It'f funny though. When exposed to the sun it turns gold or an orange like color. But when in the water it disappears. Been using it a few months and haven't broke it on fish, although haven't had any big fish on only to about 3 lbs so far. I do use a lighter leader, 8 lbs. So, still testing it this Spring. It is expendsive for my fishing budget though I think. happy fishing :D

I like Stren personally. I use 8lb clear blue and connect to a 6lb leader

03-24-2006, 07:26 PM
8# Spider Wire or 8# Berkley Vanish
