View Full Version : Fresh Amador Report

Amador has offically "turned on."I was lucky enough to get another day on the water with my Daughter today. Hit the water at 6:15AM (Yes it's almost impossible to get a 26 year old out of bed at 4AM on her day off!) But what a morning.
Had a double on our first pass and it didn't let up until after 9AM. Ended up boating 14 with a number of LDR's. (She was spooled once!) All fish were between 2.5 and 3.5 pounds and pretty hot.

Here's "Daddy Little Girl" with one on...

Off the water before 10AM with plenty of fish so Daughter can have a fish fry with her friends....

All fish were caught toplining near the dam. Key is to troll slowly.......

We were also lucky to run into Manteca Steve and his son and they were also doing pretty well

11-01-2005, 02:49 PM
Sweet deal! I ran into Manteca Steve and his boy Danny last week when I was shore fishin...I gave him a holler from shore last time, and bs'd a little when we had our horde of fish at the cleaning station.

11-01-2005, 02:50 PM
(Yes it's almost impossible to get a 26 year old out of bed at 4AM on her day off!)

LOL I just turned 27 and I can barely get my ass out of bed sometimes. Fishin is the easiest thing to wake up for though. Work is defintily not that easy.

11-01-2005, 04:11 PM
HH3 ...if ya don't mind ??? what was the hot lure ??
I wish I could get there on a week day DANg nice catch...I'll have to call insick next week and write a note for kiddo too...hmmm
am I a bad dad for that ;D ;D ;D ;D ?

11-01-2005, 05:07 PM
I fished sunday with my 3yr old daughter my buddy and his 8yr old and our wives caught limits using power bait and gold 1/4 oz cast masters and floating worms on the bottom all in all good day with the family. My buddies 8 yr old caught the biggest fish around 5lbs. fished from the dam it was packed.....

11-01-2005, 06:09 PM
Glad to hear you got 'em HH3! We couldn't troll the dam on the weekend without crossing someone or being crossed, so we just tried the other areas. I guess that is the price you pay for going on the weekend.

I marked the spots we did find and hook fish on this map. The powermouse and just a nightcrawler 100+ feet behind the boat were the tickets.

Nice job HH3,
I'm glad to see you and your daughter had a great day.

I went to Del Valle and my son got 2 planters. Nothing trolling.

I guess it's time to make the big drive. What was the hot baits for you?

Happy Fishing

11-01-2005, 06:43 PM
HH3 guess you haven't lost your touch, now it's time to search for the old 10 pounder you didn't get last year. ;) ;D

11-01-2005, 07:44 PM
1/2 a crawler was the hot set-up. Mickey, You're right.... I'm still chasing that 10 pounder.....

11-01-2005, 08:13 PM
HH, good to see you just continued where you let off from last year, but you know I am the one that has to get the first ten pounder, but being the good sportsman that I am, I will give you until about the end of november while I chase salmon around, then watch out, cuz I will be trolling right beside you *;D
oh yea, as usual, nice pics.

11-02-2005, 09:51 AM
I was there as well. Left the boat at home and saved a bit of dough. Fished by the boathouse and brought home a limit. Nothing under 3 lbs. Lost 2 that seemed fairly large! Had my drag set pretty loose too. Oh well, something to look forward to. Taught everyone on both sides of me the method I was using and they all limited out too.

11-02-2005, 10:32 AM
HH3 great lookin fish

11-02-2005, 12:01 PM
HH3- Great job as always. What....you couldn't get anything bigger than those minnows? ;D Hey, were ya' using a dodger and spinner/crawler combo?

11-02-2005, 12:59 PM
I'm going this weekend, can't wait!

11-02-2005, 03:35 PM
What the heck is a "powermouse?" I tried a Google search and didn't find any pictures of fish bait just supercharged critters you hook-up to a computer!

11-02-2005, 03:43 PM
Yak, do a search on the sniffer, I believe there's a lot of info about "power mouses" and even a picture or two.

11-02-2005, 03:55 PM
Use a super small treble hook. Make a powerbait head with a power worm trailer. Make the head small enough to just cover the hook. Some people use 1/2 a power worm. When you make it correctly, it looks like a little mouse. Mickey is right. There are very descriptive reports further back on the trout thread, with some pictures too.

11-02-2005, 04:15 PM
Nice load there, HH3! As much as it will pain me to pay nearly $20 just to get my float tube wet, I'll probably head out to Amador soon. After all, I too am looking to take a ride with 10-pound Bertha at the end of my line... ;D

11-02-2005, 05:02 PM
Speaking of ten pounders, what about this idea; a one-day Amador biggun contest? There has been the now famous annual Pyramid fest, there's an upcoming sturgeon bash. It doesn't have to be a big thing, just maybe a pool with a start time and a finish time.
Just a thought..........

11-02-2005, 06:30 PM
Shoot...Im in it to win it ;)

Hi Hog,
Sorry for giving a late report. *Had family things going on.
My son & I limited out by 2pm. *We started looking at the other coves, mostly checking out what was going on, just a few fish. *Exciting part of the day was going back to the dam and had a double hook up. *Caught our limit and were able to go home.
It was nice seeing you there, talked to Mike22ca and his cousin, nice guys. They sure were nailing them! Hope to see you all out there again.
Manteca Steve

11-02-2005, 06:58 PM
just a soon as i am tired of doing salmon in the back yard, we'll be up there!

11-02-2005, 09:46 PM
I am game for a contest, but it needs to be mid december on, so that we can finish up with salmon first. I am interested in a ten pound contest too if anyone is interested. First one that weights in a ten pounder or better at the lodge and has pics wins, up to what ever date all of you want. I would suggest that we keep it friendly with a small wager like five bucks so no one gets their feelings hurt.

11-02-2005, 09:50 PM
i am in on this one ;D ;D

11-03-2005, 03:57 AM
The PowerMouse as I know it

http://img371.imageshack.us/img371/7929/powermouse49zc.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

You can mix and match whatever colors the fish like on a given day

11-03-2005, 03:58 AM
A one day "Amador Biggun Fest" sounds like a good idea and count us in on a season long first 10 pounder.

11-03-2005, 05:54 AM
power mouse... what the heck????? Allfish what is that "tail" made out of?

11-03-2005, 08:17 AM
Highlands- The tail is is a powerworm. When I heard about the powermouse last spring I thought it was a joke being played on all us rookie sniffers. I tried it.....it worked! ;) ;D Count me in on the 10lber contest.

11-03-2005, 08:37 AM
Seems to be some interest, particularly in a ten-pounder idea. Need dates, some really basic rules and some sort of incentive($, a decent prize like a new reel or something).
I have no idea about how to organize something like this, but I could certainly try to be the point person.
I'll be out of town a day or two, but let me know. Generate some ideas! 8)
Also, I'll do some talking around and see what I can find.
I'll digest this idea and try and come with something.

11-03-2005, 09:03 AM
count me in!!!

11-03-2005, 09:13 AM
Hey however you guys wanna set a contest up, I'm in... Sounds fun

11-03-2005, 09:28 AM
OK we are in just say when and where, sounds like alot of fun.

11-03-2005, 10:27 AM
You know I'm in!!!!

11-03-2005, 12:15 PM
Sounds like fun, Hitdog & I are in.

11-03-2005, 01:56 PM
Throw some dates around guys, this sounds like fun.. by the way I want to fish with Freon!!! :o

11-03-2005, 02:09 PM
I say we start NOW. Biggest fish by XX date! Has to be photographed and weighed at lodge.

We can also have an Amador Fest where someone wins for biggest fish of the day? Same fish might win both pots?

What do you think?

11-03-2005, 02:50 PM
Maybe some of the local Amador guys can get with the folks up there, to help set something up, it would be good for there business..

11-03-2005, 02:54 PM
I'm in if I can fish with HH3 ;D ;D everybody pick your ringer now ;) the place is so crowded during the weekends I'd say a mini-fest on a weekday might work :D

11-03-2005, 03:03 PM
This sounds like fun , I could maybe have some beginners luck as I've only fished Amador once about 20 years ago . Do the trout there have those parasites like Berryessa's trout do ?

Tight Lines , Dan

11-03-2005, 03:05 PM
Awe Mickey...what about us poor souls that have to work on the weekdays?

11-03-2005, 04:09 PM
Lets get some dates on this gig. I'm in...for sure!

11-03-2005, 05:06 PM

"You know guys, the ringer is in my boat"

11-03-2005, 05:13 PM
Take a day off, it's only a job and after all it's fishing ;D

11-03-2005, 05:24 PM
What about school? and what day? if it nots important, i might be able to play hookie with my Strait A's ::).

11-03-2005, 05:28 PM
I'm having doubts about your "Straight" A's. ::) ::)

11-03-2005, 05:49 PM
I would love to have a weekday get together and avoid the rat race. 8)

Count me in. I'm sure my work schedule will let me squeeze in a day at Amador :D

ALLFISH, no ringers in the boat. I know who.

11-03-2005, 05:54 PM
This idea seems to be gathering steam, but I'd vote for letting the lake fill a bit more.

11-03-2005, 06:00 PM
* I'm having doubts about your "Straight" A's. ::) ::)
OK ,OK, 1 B! but its in science, and that doesent matter...

11-03-2005, 06:27 PM
Hoghunter, now you have shaken it up. Nice stringer of trout. I go along with Freon, its salmon time now. Plenty of time for Amador trout after.

Did anyone catch a ten pounder last year? Best we did last year was an 8lb 2 ozer. It was caught by my wife with a rainbow hot shot in the river arm.

Manteca Steve
11-03-2005, 07:49 PM
* * * * * * * * YES SIREEEEEEEE COUNT ME IN !!

11-03-2005, 08:06 PM
Paddleman, I don't think any "sniffers" caught a 10 pounder last year, unless you count the attached *;)

I agree with AllFish, if we're going to pick a day for a Mini-Fest let's set it up for sometime in January when the Lake's full and the bite's on Fire.

Mickey, I don't know about being a "ringer" but you've got a ride in my boat anytime you'd like. ;)

11-03-2005, 08:17 PM
he only caught that cuz I told him where to fish and what bait to use ;D

11-03-2005, 08:26 PM
Just goes to show you just how special I am...... I'm one of the very few that actually listens to you ;D ;D

11-03-2005, 08:34 PM
Going amador this weekend, I ll be on my float tube with my buddy on Sunday...see you all there.

11-03-2005, 08:52 PM
Yep HH, your special all right, not too bright if your listening to me, but special. The sad part is that I listen to you too. ;D

I dont need pics of some fish that was run over by a steam roller, I like the fat, long fish. How much did you pay that guy to run over your fish anyway? ;D ;D

Heres a pic of real amador trout

11-03-2005, 09:13 PM
That's real nice freon...

that just got you in the "haul of fame" ;) :o :o

You too HH.......Nice Alaskan flatty ::)

11-03-2005, 09:13 PM
Kinda resembles a Sacramento River Chinook Salmon James ::) ::) ;D

11-03-2005, 09:28 PM
it does, no way, okay so maybe I was a little mistaken, lets try this one, let me know what you think of it.

11-04-2005, 05:33 AM
Two words can explain that one...."Fat Pig" ;D ;D and it looks like you're getting new carpet ;)

11-04-2005, 09:33 AM
That trout is as big around as it is long.

A real football.

11-04-2005, 09:43 AM
This was our biggest last year.

Caught Feb. 23, 2005, 8 lbs 2 oz., caught with a #50 rainbow hot shot, Jackson River Arm, Lake Amador.

11-04-2005, 10:06 AM
I got a 10.8 last year off the docks. We tried to take camera phone pics but it was too dark. No biggie though, those fish are not uncommon there at all. Caught tons of fish from 6-9 last year. It seems like most of the stringers consisted of 4-7#rs.

11-04-2005, 10:58 AM
Gotta love the docks (esp. when you can get the right spot, IF you can get it)...

11-04-2005, 11:13 AM
Shoot half the time you don't even have to be right "there". I get a lot of my fish...well...we'll say "out awayz" lol

11-04-2005, 01:39 PM
Yeah, but when it gets warmer, the dock is the sure shot...unfortunately people chill there ALL day.

11-04-2005, 06:46 PM
Mickey, I didnt need new carpet, that was my ex wifes house, cool huh, *;D *;D *;D
Paddleman, nice toad, I just love all of those big trout.

11-04-2005, 09:19 PM
December or January?
We can work out which day. Good point about the crowds, but it either way.
There are two basic ideas out there; first is someone producing a weighed and verified at the lodge 10 or over pounder from x date to y date. Second is a one-day Amador fest where the biggest takes all.
While I was down at the Monterey aquarium(a must see, by the way-we're talking HUGE yellowfin tuna, a tank of 8 to 10 pound steelhead, sturgeon, well you get the idea) I was thinkin.
The one day event, set it and then everyone who wants to participate signs up from 5:30 or so to 7:30 or so then go fish until 4 or whatever(before dusk). Each participant contributes something like two bottles of power bait, a couple of lures, a new G loomis GL3 ;D or such. You have to sign up and ante up to play. End of the day, produce your biggest catch and good luck. The lodge's scale is our scale to use to determine the heaviest fish. Winner takes all? or second place also?
I am not so sure about the 10 pounder contest although I like it a lot. Sure would be nice to have a new Ambassador reel or something for the first one to produce it.
Anyone in tight with the Lockhart clan and could talk with them? Be cool to have them involved.
One thing is fer sure......big party at the lodge at day's end!!!!!!!!!!! ;) 8)
The idea has definite life to it! Just got to work out the details.

11-05-2005, 05:34 AM
This my biggest from Amador, or at least the biggest I have proof of ;) If I remember I think it was +/- 6 lbs. and I caught from the dock on PB in the spring of 2003.

http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/489/amadorbiggie0zy.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

11-05-2005, 08:11 AM
Be fun to have a winter mini Fest at Amador. Preferably on a weekday rather than the weekend. Connie and I will try to make it.. Larry

11-05-2005, 06:31 PM
Nice fish allfish, I see you own one of those shirts too :D

11-05-2005, 07:23 PM
Actually now I have 3, last week when we camped I didn't have a t shirt(I brought clothes for cold temps and it was bright sunshine) so I broke down and got a new one.

Big Ken
11-07-2005, 07:53 PM
I am in for both contest. I havent fished there alot but i am willing to give it a shot.

11-07-2005, 08:05 PM
Nice to see there is still great trolling action on the lake, several years ago, I fished the lake pretty hard with my father, I love the Trout that come out of there. We always trolled a small spinner with beads and power bait on the trebble hook. We trolled slow and kept the offering in the top 5 feet of water with a small amount of weight. We had outstanding luck crusing the bank line. Also great fun to fish the lake in a float tube....

12-14-2005, 02:07 PM
I love the Lockhart clan. I would love to help set something up, and fish both events. Problem is, I am having back surgery in the next couple of weeks, and I'm not sure I'll be making it to any fishing grounds between now and then. Still keeping my fingers crossed that I can join in...had anyone else spoken to them, and is there a tentative date yet?

12-14-2005, 02:53 PM
Here's my biggest from Amador, caught in 2003 on a white crappie jig on 4lb test. This beast took me a good 15 minutes to land. Not sure how big he is, but I'm guessing a good 8 or 9 lbs.

12-14-2005, 08:45 PM
Are all of you trying to get a bet going between sniffers or talking about Bobs tourney? I am lost on this, I had a good clue when we first posted this, but now I am lost.

12-14-2005, 09:01 PM
Freon lost?
Say it isn't so ;)

12-14-2005, 09:13 PM
Yep, I am lost, now dont go and confuse that with having old timers disease like some retiree's that I know ;D

12-14-2005, 09:16 PM
That "old Timers" disease has some advantages....

1) I can meet new friends every single day
2) I can hide my own Easter Eggs!!!!!

12-14-2005, 09:28 PM
Yep and there is another advantage to getting as old as you are, around nine every morning you can take a good long wizz, just like you did when you were a teen, and around ten you take a nice hefty #2, and stinky too, just like when you were a teen, now if you could just get out of bed before noon, that would be a bonus ;D

12-14-2005, 10:04 PM
Hmmm,Ok Freon, pass me the dunce cap , its my turn to sit in the corner! Bobs tournament? sniffer bet? I want to play!

12-15-2005, 07:13 AM
we were talking about getting a small bet tourney going for just sniffers, five bucks for the first fish over ten and then a one day tourney for either biggest stringer or biggest fish and that would be five bucks too, but seems like that went away, then Beth put this thread back up and I figured everyone was trying to get that going again, but now I am not sure???
Sorry to confuse you too Partner, but you know what they say, it you cant dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bs. ;D

12-15-2005, 01:35 PM

And there's no one better at baffling and bs than you.

12-15-2005, 05:13 PM
I know the big fish guys had an outing in the delta this year!! It would be a kick to have a sniffer fish tournament at Amador!! Please count JW and I in on it!!

12-15-2005, 07:28 PM
you guys need a freaken chat room, or walkie talkies or something.

12-15-2005, 09:10 PM
uuuh, isnt that what this is?
Partner, if bob would get his but in gear and start planting some big ones, I am sure we would be having a lot of people going for it, might need to wait until early spring though, cuz they are shy ;D
especially Dennis and HH3.

12-16-2005, 09:05 AM
In past years the bigger fish have been planted later in the season, when their breeding careers are finished. Here's a 12.5# brood hen I caught a few year's back -- and I've been hooked on Amador ever since! :o

12-16-2005, 09:27 AM
WOW :o..Nice. sjshark and I are in too. Lets make a tentave spring date, and try to see what the best days are. I don't think we could do anything on the weekend, except play bumper boats. Anyone know a good day in spring, anyone with a favorite week?

12-17-2005, 05:04 PM
Fishmissus, nice catch. Last year, all of the twenty pounders and most that were over twelve came out by the end of december, did not see a single pic of one over ten after that point and the only one that I have heard of is Mikeca22. But it is entirely possible that the lake hasnt turned over yet(it did earlier last year)and the big ones havent come up yet. I did get a lot of them seven and eight later in the year and hooked a few in the ten pound range semi late last year, but earlier was better by far for bigger fish, bob had the pics at the lodge to prove it.

12-17-2005, 05:51 PM
Hey Freon,
Are you holding out about that ten pounder on us, I never heard you caught one last year :o I think it will be tougher this year for all of us. Also think I have to miss Amador this Monday and go to Del Valle. My fishing buddy has to get home for and appointment. Hope the weather holds out for Monday. :)
Happy Fishing

12-17-2005, 06:23 PM
FT, I didnt boat a ten, but had two right at the boat and had at least another one on for quite awhile. The two that I had at the boat, one just came unbuttoned and the other wrapped itself around my downrigger on the opposite side of the boat before my daughter could get the rigger up and snapped my line. I had another one that came out of the water a couple of times and had it pretty close, so I got a good view of it. I had another one that jumped out of the water six times and took all of my braided line and fifty yards of mono backing before coming unbuttoned, but it was too far away to guess at weight.
