View Full Version : Pyramid Report Nov. 4,5,6

Started Friday at 3:30 PM and fished the Willow for 4. Used Lymans, Sting Kings and Spoons. All 4 caught on Lyman. So Saturday I went to the East side and started off with the Lyman. Fished hard all day for 15 (average 20" with 2 over 24"). Went North Sunday and I had my best day yet. Stayed up late by the campfire Saturday night so we slept in Sunday and didn't start fishing till around 11 AM and fished until 4 PM. I caught 29 fish all on Lymans. Several were over 24". I had 3 in a row at 25". I was going to try for 30 when I hit 29 but when I pulled the leader up (tried to grab lure and use pliers for quick release on all) the line snapped on these fat fiesty fish and he took my hot Lyman to the bottom with a siwash hook in the lower jaw so I called it quites. The single siwash hook in the front eye of the Lyman is the way to go. It works awsome. These fish faught harder than the ones on the East side and better than I can remember ;D How these pics post :) :)

It's hog time! ;D

Time to put the spoons away and go to plugs.

Did you get a surface temperature Mako?

11-07-2005, 01:11 PM
Beautiful fish man!

11-07-2005, 01:13 PM
The surface temps were around 58 degrees.

The front siwash on the Lyman is awsome

11-07-2005, 01:17 PM

If you had a single on the rear eye you would have caught just as many. ;D

I'd bet that you didn't lose any unless the leader snapped. Once they are stuck with a Siwash they stay stuck.

BTW, the paths you are using are to the tumbnails not the actual images you are trying to post.

darn nice fish way to go.....man that lake has beautiful big fish!!

11-07-2005, 01:34 PM
I recieved this email from Glenn at Lyman and yes with the siwash hook you can't loose 'em. You can let your line slack and let them swim around and they don't come off. I think I did some good proven testing yesterday.

When rigged on the back screw, the single hook may be in the wrong position when struck. With two split rings on the front screw, the hook remains close to the body of the lure, points downward and is never totally turned away.

The hookups we get when rigged this way are superior to a single hook on the back screw.

Doc, this picture raises a question I have about fish I caught at Pyramidfest. *The head appears to be outgrowing the body. *Almost reminds me of stunted trout. *Is it common for LCT to have bigger heads than body?

The hookups we get when rigged this way are superior to a single hook on the back screw.

That's bupkis! Fish them side by side rigged either way and you'll see no difference in hookups. I've done it, trust me. Pyramid fish get stuck at least 80% of the time on the first strike. And with a single hook instead of trebles, they will come right back and strike the lure again if they don't get stuck the first time.

If you check the action with a single hook in the front or rear position you will see that the action is slightly different. The lure has more of a side to side vibration with the hook at the rear. I can't say if that makes a difference. In my experience Lymans catch fish rigged either way.

Hinrid, the fish in the picture is a normally proportioned LCT. They have huge heads and the largest mouths of any Oncorhynchus sp. This even comes through in hybrids. The best (but still not perfect) way to tell a cutbow or bowcut from a rainbow is to notice that the jaw starts behind the eye.

There were some skinny fish caught at Pyramidfest that looked like they were not getting enough to eat. But all of the fish over 20" or so looked normal.

Thanks for the report Mako, now I'm drooling to get up there. Looks like it's Wed and Thurs, anybody else want to join in the fun? How about you Doc? I forgot to ask, Mako were you fishing top water?

11-07-2005, 05:07 PM
Down 20 to 50', but I had two awsome moments. Just before dark on the East side I just set my lure behind the boat and I was clipping the line in the rigger and I got hit with the line in my hand. Also, at the North side I just clipped in and I ran over a tumble weed before I let the ball down. Then I removed the tubleweed and with pole in hand got nailed. These two were right on top. I actually saw the first one hit the lure like a bass.

Way to go Mako. I've got too many fishing plans for this weekend already and you have to start this thread. ::) Couldn't you have waited 'till next week to post this one. The fish are starting to hit everywhere; all at once - PB and IT will kill me if I make another change in plans. ;D

11-07-2005, 06:46 PM
Hammer and I will be leaving Auburn around 8:00am Weds, staying the night and fishing till about 1:00pm Thurs. Ron is bringing his Daughter and a couple of her friends on Weds also but it will be later I think. What day are you going to fish Doc?

11-07-2005, 07:19 PM
I'd like to go Wednesday if the weather is OK. We could visit Bite_Me that evening.

11-07-2005, 07:37 PM
Ken, do you want me to call you when I pull Mickey over?

Doc, I have Weds off, but if you want to go on Thurs, let me know and I will see if I can float my day off to Thurs.

11-07-2005, 09:12 PM

MAKO: :D I know why you waited till 11am to fish Sunday!!
It might have been the 20mph south wind or maybe the two foot waves? I hit the beach 1 mile up from Pelican at 7:45 and had a hook-up on my 2nd cast! In 90 minutes I released 12 fish; 17" - 26". All were less than 30 yards from shore. At 10am it calmed down enough for me to fly fish.(very carefully,I'm right handed) By noon,8 more window fish sent back to grow up.
Had a GREAT DAY!!Wht get the boat wet; went home & watched football....

11-08-2005, 05:54 AM
Well it's turning into a mini-fest for sure, VVBob was going to Eagle but decided to join us at Pyramid first and then head to Eagle ;D 8) JasonB says it looks good for Weds/Thurs for him too, he'll be in my boat 8) With Doc, Sneezy, and Grumpy in his boat lets hope our radios work better than at Eagle ::) We know GoneFishin's radio will be working and I'd hate to have to listen to him all day and not be able to talk back ;D ;D BigB, you'll never catch me ;)

11-08-2005, 06:46 AM
Mako, outstanding fish and report. I have got to hit Pyramid one of these days!

11-08-2005, 07:30 AM
Mako, what size Lyman are you fishing at Pyramid?

11-08-2005, 08:09 AM
Fixed my radio over the weekend (I hope). We'll get out there early Wednesday and see if we can locate some fish for you guys.;) That is if the east wind lets us launch.

11-08-2005, 08:14 AM
I like that idea Doc, you do all the scouting and we'll just show up and start slamming them right in front of you ;D ;D ;D Hammer says my radio is fixed now too, we'll see ::)

11-08-2005, 08:28 AM
You mean it was your radio that didn't work? Maybe I didn't really need to fix mine. ;D

This is about the time of year that Hammer got his big one last year. That spot, bye the way, has gotten kind of weedy as the lake has dropped a bit. But they should be on the beaches by now. The typical pattern of holding at about 50 ft and moving in to feed should be in effect. Unless I'm wrong again. >:(

4 and 6" Lymans are the best size for Pyramid.

11-08-2005, 09:19 AM
Ok boys I guess its time to start showing you guys how to fish ;D Somebody took pity on me working so much he said I can ride with him on Wed see you guys on the water :-*

Mr. ED, even though the wind died at the ramp we had 2 to 4 foot wind waves and the fish were pushed up right against the rocks. They loved it and so did we. They bit and faught real hard. When we launched on Sunday there was a smaller FourWinns that put in. They threw 2 buckets out (old style trolling plate,) casted out and started trolling right there at the ramp at Pelican. They caught 2 fish in the time that we started to power out ! There are Tons of fish at Pelican so you don't need to burn your gas unless you enjoy the thrill !

11-08-2005, 06:42 PM
I guess I picked the wrong time to go back to work!

I'm curious, of all the fish I caught the real silver ones were small and as they got bigger they were full of color. I actually caught one around 12" (do they stock that size?) One fish I caught was a male and it looked like it was spawned out. One fish I kept had fairly mature eggs in it. So, were the silver ones stocked this year? also, people say they spawn in April? is this changing or do they spawn for several months in different groups? Are there a ton of fish at Pelican because they stock it there?

11-09-2005, 01:41 PM
Mako the silver ones are hens. The bright reds are males in there pre spawn colors. Also they stock fish from 6 to 12 inches. And pelican they due stock fish, also it that time of the year that the fish or moving up into the shallows on the west side of the lake, they are attracted to where the *spawning channel is where the fish spawn and the scent of the eggs and milk or dumped back in the lake, south of seperator beach. And south of pelican.
