Gee BITE ME II did I leave you out ??? Ever since the good Doctor took me fishing at "his" lake last year I will forever call it his lake ;) Do you know anybody who has more knowledge about Pyramid? I didn't think so ;D the really neat thing is that he shares. ;D ;D and we all are better for it. 8)

Please don't refer to Pyramid as my lake. It belongs to the Pyramid Lake Paiute tribe. It is their sovereign land. Your lawyer isn't going to do you much good if you get caught doing something you shouldn't out there.

The Paiutes are really good neighbors. They let us use their lake for very nominal fees.

Now if they would just let BMII come in and run things, everything would be PERFECT. There would be condos, marinas, $100 user fees, and 1000's of boats on the water. And he would be living on Grand Cayman Island.;D

Doc, It is no wonder everyone did so well at the 'fest. I am sure your presentation was even better than what you have posted, so it appears that you did everything for the 'sniffers except have the fish in pens. Excellent job!!!

Make two copies Mickey, my printer is on the blink. Duane and I would have never fished the shallows if Doc hadn't suggested it. And we had some of the best fishing we have ever had.

Doc,

Thanks for sharing the file of your presentation. I took notes as you were talking and now I can a printed copy of your presentation to the notes. There's some great concepts in here applicable to fish movements in other lakes, even black bass as they move up from their deep water sanctuaries to feed in shallow water. Take care and thanks for introducing Connie and I to Pyramid this spring. We love the place. Connie just went through all 49 pages of your presentation. Hope to see you on the water again. :) Connie and Larry Rayher(fish4fun)

After taking the printed version home and reviewing the book. I only have one question ???...Is the "male in eclipse" the guy "behind the sunglasses" or the trout he's holding??LOL

I just added Nancy's presentation and creel census data to the first post in this thread with her permission. If you don't have broadband, viewing her slides may be slow. But the story is well worth the time it takes to upload the large document.

Rusty, I have been in eclipse since my '30's. I remember the precise day that it all started going down hill. ;D

Dang! All that trial and error stuff for years out the window!
Well, I was ALMOST there, and i've been lurking on these posts for a few years now hoping noone else would learn the 'secrets' of pyramid - I notice though youse guys all be about boatin' - Don't any of you flyfish the lake? :-/

Farrier_Frank
11-06-2004, 06:26 AM
There were many fly fishermen at Pyramid BobbinBill, along with shore casters, and from what I could see they were doing just fine. If my memory serves me I believe Pyramid was once noted as the best fly fishing lake in the west. After fishing it for the first time myself, I can see why.

There are no secrets on these boards and I for one am glad. I have learned more about fishing in the short time I've been active on the boards than all the years of trial and error, too.

By the way: Welcome to the boards, we like to hear from new voices out there in Sniffer land.

UGH! BobbinBill - I know some of these guys whip the bugs and may have some clue for you. If you have been sneak reading for a couple of years, then you should know that the Fly Fishing info is found on the Fly Fishing Board. ;) If you mean trolling with Flys or streemers, then that is a different story and I'll bet Doc and others can throw some light on that subject for you. ;) Every now and then I'll thread a bubble on a spinning out fit and pitch a Fly but that's about as far as I go. ;D

Hey Doc,

Went out to pyramid about a week ago for some watersking...however, we did make an attempt for some "perch"....We did catch a couple, but what was really suprising was the number of trout we caught as well... ::) ;)...We also caught one of the biggest chuicui(sp?) i've ever seen....
It's amazing how those trout like the same jigs as the perch.

I put the files back up so the links in the first post will now work.

Kent ----- sssssshhhhh! ;)

If the surface temp gets up to 74 degrees, I won't fish for perch. C&Ring is lethal for the trout by-catch. Pyramid has alkalinity problems at the surface just like Eagle.

Doc,

The funny part was that we really were trying for the Perch. We've always heard of them, but never seen them. We did get some strange looks and got quized by one of the tribal police. Luckily, he was a pretty good guy and didn't bust our chops real bad. He did give us the lecture though...And he mentioned the same thing you did about the surface temp.

The opener is only a coupla months away! Not to miss any fishing, I landed a 7 Lb. Rainbow and a 4 Lb. rainbow at Caples 4th of July, along with numerous smaller ones. If anyone can show me a place to post photos, I can throw on a photo of a Beautiful 6 Lb. male cutt from pyramid last year...
Didn't guy who does the stars have a site? I forgot to bookmark it.

I have a question for the Doc - Most locals know about the Newlands project; and I regularly camp at the Stone mother and have been there when the REAL LOCALS have held 'prayer' ceremonies right at my camp... but wasn't that thing under water not so long ago, and why would it be sacred now? Not that I'm direspecting it mind you, I even voluntarily clean up around the place. Do you know when it was declared sacred? And do you know if we will ever be able to go out to the hot springs (needles)again?

BobbinBill
07-26-2005, 03:56 PM
Sorry for hoggin the post... I haven't heard anything lately about the reintroduction of the LCT into the truckee - anybody have anything to report? I haven't been fishing it lately, but it's looking really good right now - and would the LCT look any different in it's new (old) environment?

Lot's of questions there BobbinBill. ;)

1)Go to the first sticky thread on the "Talk to the Sniffer" forum for instructions for hosting pictures and some suggested free host sites. You could e-mail the picture to FISHSTALKER and he would probably put it up on is site. You could link to that. He posted in this thread so you can look up his website and e-mail address there.

2) The Stone Mother was surrounded by water when the lake was spilling into Winnemucca. That was the level of the lake during most of the time that the Paiutes were in residence. You can see that level on the Pyramid as the first "bathtub ring" about 50 ft above where the surface is now. So the Stone Mother was always visible except that the baskets may have been under water.

3) We will probably never be able to get back into the Needles. Some idiots painted graffiti on the rocks and the tribe just felt that enough was enough.

4) The plan to re-establish cutts in the Truckee is moving forward slowly. California now plants nothing but cutts. But there is a private fishing club that plants browns and NDOW continues to stock rainbows. The browns are not too bad, but rainbows must be eliminated before there is any real hope of bringing back naturally reproducing cutts. The rainbows interbreed with the cutts and cutthroat social systems won't allow them to co-exist with rainbows.

There is much research going on right now studying the interaction of cutts with other species, radio tagging of cutthroat and rainbow trout to learn where they go, and attempts to identify suitable spawning habitats.

Yea...that's the ticket...Tufa tablets

No wonder I have Acid indigestion...no tufa tablets!!

I'll need a prescription...let's see

This would involve a regular trip to Pyramid ;D

And a return visit every month or so....to renew the prescription ;)

With an occaisional visit to the pharmacy at Cabella's 8)

Just to insure that the dose os right :-*

And that doesn't even include treatment for Strange Duck Syndrome??.....(well maybe just a little odd)

This could turn out to be just the relief I need!! ;D ;D ::)
