View Full Version : Bait Fish in SF Bay

Hi Folks,
I am relatively new to fishing in the bay and would appreciate a short primer on what types of baitfish are in the bay and at what times of the year. Not looking for spots to fish but the basic understanding of what is going on with the bait.

by no means and expert but with my limited expericene...chovies can be had spring and through summer in the bay. Only been in the bay fishing for the last couple of years (Since DFG decided there are no Salmon/bottom fish to be had:nunu5pn:)...and limited access at that in the bay..

heres a list of good baitfish in SF bay

Anchovies for bass, halibut,salmon,rockfish
Sardines for bass, halibut,salmon,rockfish
herring for bass,halibut,salmon,rockfish
Shiner surf perch for bass and halibut
bullheads for bass,sturgeon,sharks
mudsuckers for bass and sharks
midshipmen for sharks
grass shrimp for bass and sturgeon,flounder,perch
mud shrimp for bass and sturgeon
ghost shrimp for bass and sturgeon

All of these bait fish can be purchased Live in the bay area at different times of the year at local bait shops or caught local with some spare time
depending on what is biting
