Took a trip with Mrs C. on 88 just to check things out and try her new camera. First stop was Silver Lake. Silver was still mostly covered with ice but the area around the dam was clear and fishable. The ice is starting to break and it wont be long if the weather warms. Both Silver Lake campgrounds remain closed. Took a few casts but got nothing. Caples remains icebound but the ice is pulling away from the shore near the spillway and at the dam. Noticed some smaller trout cruising in the clear water next to the shore. Bet they are hungry. Caples CG and the resort are closed. Should be able to fish selected spots real soon. Red Lake remains in an Icy grip. Much of the snow is off the ice and the upper end of the lake has some open water at the shore. Still a couple of weeks out. Headed down into the Hope Valley. The road to Blue Lakes is closes at the Sno Park. The Carson River remains high but is fishable at the 88 and 89 bridges and in the slower holes. Sopped at Markleeville for a bit of lunch at the Deli then Took a look at ICR. Windy with little going on. Thanks for the ride Nadia. Beginning to look like Spring up on 88. About 3 weeks late.

hey cc...the benefit of your scouting is immeasurable. I grew up fly fishing Ebbetts (both sides) with my dad & his buddies in the late '50's...now I'm passing it on to my 8 year old boy. His 20 year old sister can toss a mean fly but discovered the opposite sex & we lost her...she still does the Desolation trips, though.

Again, thanks for the tips for those not so near. The wife's dad lives in Dayton so we cross 88 quite often...can't get enough of that road, it's magic. You keep posting pics & I'll soon need a drool cup. See ya on the Carson when the pass opens...we always wear our SF Giants shirts, so give a holler.

all the best,
jph

Thanks Mrefly and welcome to the Sniffer. It will be awhile until Ebbetts opens.

CC, As usual, you outdone yourself. Thanks for the report and the pics. Headin' back up the hill this weekend for a little R&R. Home for the next weekend for a sons graduation, then back up with an extra day off the first week of June for a little Silver fishin', geez, I hope I remember how to fish.

Really appreciate the report as I am itching to get up there, but it's looking like that may be a couple more weeks off with the campgrounds probably closed for a few more weeks.

I believe he uses "ICR" to stand for Indian Creek Reservior near Markleville....can be confusing though since it could also stand for Ice House Reservior....well maybe....both good lakes!!

ps - one of my foundest memories of fishing Caples was one year (1999 I believe) coming back from South Lake tahoe to valley and taking 'scenic' route home via H.88 in early May. Didn't plan to fish but stopped near spillway for a stretch break. Noticed most of lake snowed over, but some holes appearing and cracks. For the heck of it, we decided to amuse ourselves since tackle was in trunk and cast towards holes/big cracks and let powerbait (all I had) fall through cracks....needless to say, fishing was red hot, including a few browns! I think we did as good that day as any date that year going several times after ice out.

I agree and am hoping that the new way of launching at the lake is better than the old. Fishing Caples and Silver is on the list for the year and we will be hitting it quite often after Pyramid closes on June 30th (trout fishing that is, you can still fish for perch)......Jetspray
