*Pyramid Lake Barbless Hook Shore Fishing Blues.
Met with Jetspray at the North Minden Staging Area at 0445. Also meeting us there was Fat Fish who decided to spend his birthday on the east side of the Sierra. A stop in Carson City at McD for breakfast and off to Pyramid Lake. Arrived at Block House at a little after 0700. The weather wasn't all that cold but there was a stiff wind from the north driving whitecaps down the lake. Later in the day the wind was to shift to the west with gusts strong enough to drive stuff on the shore into the lake. Fished until around 1300 with no trout to the shore. We had lots hits and I even had a nice male LCT 2 feet from the net but it got away. There were several caught on the shore by others but not of any size. We were skunked..... Well almost. :D at around 1100 I hooked something that stripped off 100 feet of line and was gone in the blink of an eye. Several casts later the same thing happened again. Finally I was able to bring to the shore perhaps the most ugly fish I've ever caught. Guys on the shore told it was a Cui-Ui, a fish native to Pyramid Lake and no other place in he world. Must been a school of them swimming by because Jeff, Dave and a guy named Gabby got some as well. It was an interesting day. Quite windy but with the winds at our back much of the time. We certainly caught fish that we have caught before. This will most likely be my last trip to Pyramid until October. Thanks for the ride Dave. Nice seeing you again Jeff. Hope you tell us of your success aboard the PT109 on Thursday.

Looking at those fish, you arent kidding, they peg the ugly meter! when we fish the ocean for salmon or rockfish, we catch Hake on occasion, they are runners up in the ugly pageant.

Nice report CC. I wonder if those things are worth eating, probably like a carp or sqaw fish.

Sounds like an interesting day. Wonder if any of the Rangers saw you guys catching the Cui-uis?

These fish rank high on the endangered species list and must be returned if you catch one. The Piute Tribe counted them as a food source at one time but now protect them. There is even a hatchery for them on the Truckee River. Thes fish feed on the bottom in numbers and if they are in the area are difficult not to snag. The Ranger was watching and I suspect he would have been pissed if we tried to keep one.
