When i use keel weights i usually start with a 1/8 ounce and work my way to a 1/2ounce.
I do not hook it direct to the dodger.I hook it to my main snap swivel then run a 8-12'' leader to the dodger.
This just works better for me.And doesent take any action away from the dodger.Hope this helps.

I am just beginning to experiment with keel weights, so I don't have enough experience. But, the veteran at the marina at Twin Lakes (near Bridgeport) told me he top-line trolls using a 1/8 ounce keel weight. He then attaches about a 5 foot leader to it.

I have used keel weights for the past few years, usually early in the season when I want to get just a few feet below the surface. I find 1/8 and 1/4 ounce work well, and occasionally will run 2 in tandem, with a fairly long leader behind. Can be pretty deadly if you are running just a bare crawler on a hook.
