Hit Chabot Saturday 8-1pm with my buddy John. Trolled Firetiger Raps. This was the highlight of the day! After 3 spectacular jumps and a 9-10 min fight we landed Johnny G's personal best 9.17 Lassen Beauty. We were in Half Moon Bay 2.2 mph f-5 firetiger on the surface. Only three others for the day all around 1.5 lbs. Lost a couple right at the boat and lost another big one that broke the 8lb leader at impact. John and I have been fishing together for 4 years. He is 84 years young and he was the captain of the boat for both of my records. He said yesterday was one of his most exciting moments in 70 years of fishing.

Wow, that sounds like a lot of fun. I often wonder if my six pound test would hold up under the fight of a nine pound trout, and you say you were using eight pound test or just the leader?

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

No problem at all if you fight the fish right. 2 lb test and 10lb fish are great fun. That is why your reel has a drag system to let out before anything breaks and tires the fish faster than a locked up drag. Also a longer rod with light action can handle light lines and big fish better as well.
I rarely use anything larger than 4 lb. You will get more strikes in the trout world with lighter line.
Cheers!

It depends on what type of fishing you are doing. When you are trolling @ 2.5 mph and a 9 lb fish hits, it is possible to break an 8 lb leader. If you are fishing from the bank or drifting you can bring in a big fish on lighter line. I use Lamiglas Kokanee rods with Abu-Garcia 4600 reels. 10 lb main line with 8 lb leader. I've lost a couple, but brought in many limits with this set-up.

Tbruski it right. Heavier line for trolling, sorry about that. I was referencing the type of fishing I do most. Streams, rivers, and some bank fishing.

Thanks for sharing that great advice about the lines, trolling, and the role the drag plays. I appreciate it very much! :)
