Well my first ever opener was quite a weekend to remember. We arrived in Tahoe on Fri afternoon and my dad and I stopped by the West Carson River to scout out our fishing spots for the following day. We saw TONS of HUGE trout just below the 89 bridge and figured that is where we would try if it wasn't too crowded in the morning. Sat morning revealed our scouted spot occupied by 545am so we decided to head upstream from the 89 bridge and didn't get any bites. It was so cold that our rod tips and fishing line were covered with ice making it difficult to fish. The temp on the truck on the drive up was 22 outside BURRRRRRR. We decided to try downstream from the bridge without any luck. We found a spot just below the bridge around 9am and tried our luck there. The guys across the river from us were just killin them. They were landing some of the biggest trout I've ever seen and making it look easy. We fished across the river from these trout experts, and I was paying close attention to their techniques and baits. They were slammin them on eggs, spinners, and flys. I was able to hook up and land 3 fish sat morning 1 small planter about 13 inches long and two nice 3lbers (1 on a black and gold rooster tail and 2 on a silver panther martin).

We left the river by noon to head home for some lunch and then off to the K-Mart to pick up some more supplies. We were back on the west carson by 6pm but this time we were lucky enough to get the honey hole that the guys were in earlier in the morning. We could see those fatties posted up in a hole just below the bridge and even more just above a boulder in the middle of the river below the bridge. We threw everything we had at them including eggs, crawlers, spinners, and our newly purchased black flys. My 19 yo niece hooked into and landed this fatty just before sunset on a fly. It was 22 inches long, 6.5 inches wide, and just over 7lbs. Her personal best and it was awesome to help her land it!

Sunday morning my brother-in-law took one for the team and was at the honey hole by 5am freezing his tail off before the rest of the clan arrived at 7am. We were using eggs, spinners, kastmasters, and black flys. Between the 5 of us we caught 9 more trout that day. 3 of the 9 were around 7lbs and my dad landed a monster to 9lbs--> personal bests for all of us.

Here is my 11 yo niece with the two 7lbers that she caught that day. She must have lost 3 or 4 fatties before we finally got her drag adjusted enough to handle such large fish. She could barely hold these fish up for the picture.

This was by far the best fishing weekend any of us have ever had. We will definitely make the opener a family tradition from now on. We had such a great time. :cheesy:
