After breakfast at Sharkey's up 88 for another look. First stop Red. I parked below the dam and walked up and to my happy surprise the lake was completely free of ice. Grabbed my gear and started tossing stuff and 0700. This time of day and year I'm usually the first out but I wasn't. Seems Eric St. Denis, the son of Gene St. Denis of Lake Tahoe fame and a first class Sniffer, beat me to it. I walked down to the outlet but couldn't see any activity. I worked my way back using a Kastmaster. Nothing. The lake still seems asleep. Next stop Caples. There was a little open water off the dam so I gave it a try dragging Kastmasters off the ice. Nothing. Tried green Gulp at the edge of the ice. Nothing. I think the ice is too close to get into deeper water. Did a drive by of the spillway and noted there was much more open water. Back over the pass toward the Carson Valley but first a look up the Blue Lakes Road. The road is closed 4 miles above the Sno Park and the Campground remains closed. Stopped at the West Carson for a little flood fishing. Managed a nice 21 inch LCT native right off the bat but I noticed that below a near by bush were some real bruisers. I teased them for a half hour or so and finally one of the big boys hit. It was a frantic fight that lasted less than 30 seconds. The hook came out and the big fish had melted back into the fast water. Fun while it lasted. ;D The weather was fantastic with the view at Red breathtaking. Hope the fishing warms up. Caples should be free of ice by the end of next week. Now if only the snow will melt. Eric it was nice meeting you. Tell your dad that CC sez hi.

Sorry I wasn't able to tag along this time CC, great looking pic's. With the temps hitting 90 + here by thrusday, and the wind coming up from time to time, I am positive about lakes being free of ice:oregonian_winesmile:picnic1:......Jetspray

Awesome CC and thanks for the great pics and update. I'm sure I'll be up in the area next month for a Caples/Carson combo.

I had a nice day up on the West Carson last year under similar conditions..........first cast 20" rainbow........had I given up then, I would have had a 100% success rate......3 hours later, not another bite!

Ah yes the first cast - first fish jinx. If I hook something on the first cast I'll often try to farm it off.:cheesy:
