went fishing on the south fork American. got to there late; it was hot and the water was low. to make a long story short i achieved 5 personal bests.

1. most fish caught in one day.
2. most fish C & R in one day (9 total).
3. biggest brown i've caught yet (around 16 inches).
4. caught the most browns i've ever caught in one day (2).
5. caught my biggest fish yet.

the action started hot and ended hot. caught 12 trout total, released 8; 2 browns (one 16 and one 15 incher), and the rest of the trout were 16 inches and under. unfornutately, the 16 inch rainbow and a few smaller ones got gut hooked, despite using barbless circle hooks and are now dinner.

didn't take pics of most of the fish because they weren't really sniffer worthy and i wanted to get them into the water as fast as possible.

* i don't care if any of you hate on the smaller fish i kept. i don't want to keep any fish; they were gut hooked and fish happens.

nice fish!

you probably don't want to hear it, but doing catch and release (such as that NICE brown) in that net, it's not so good for the fish. The knots on the net really can mess with the fish.

Consider a C&R net such as this one, plus you can easily measure them!: Cabela's: Measure Nets (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Fly-Fishing/Fly-Fishing-Accessories/Nets-Wading-Staffs-Creels|/pc/104793480/c/104721480/sc/104339880/i/103892580/Measure-Nets/711382.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FN %3D1100462%26WTz_l%3DSBC%253BBRprd741695&WTz_l=SBC%3BBRprd741695%3Bcat103892580)

whatever happened to enjoying someones pics and not feeling the need to give advice on something he or she did wrong. Im pretty sure the whole catch and release issue has been drilled into his head enough in the last month. He's making the effort and has stated numerous time is is looking to get a better net. Sorry if I am coming on strong here but im really tired of these posts. Im sure Ryan you had no bad intentions at all what so ever but its the "other" that are waiting for a response like your so they can start bashing again.

"you probably don't want to hear this"

nah man, i like suggestions when they're done in a polite way. i appreciate the tip. i'm still low on funds right now but that's a nice price range. i landed the rest of them in the water and didn't use the net but that brown was sooo freaking hard to land! does the netting in that net get easily tangled with hooks? i want to save up for a rubber mesh net to reduce tangle/snag issues.

thanks for the kind response. i don't follow the forum closely enough to know that others have given you advice. but knowing that you are aware of all the stuff, thats awesome! the net sometimes gets a little tangled with the hooks, so ya, the rubber one might be a little better.

again, awesome fish, and thanks for the report!

hey Ryan again man it was nothing on your post at all whats so ever. I know you meant nothing wrong by your advice. in fact I like how you made the post. Sorry if that seemed like it was directed at you. I probably shouldnt have highlighted your post. The posts you do make are always very helpful and informative.

As for the net you are correct in the fact they are great to use. I love how they dont collapse on the fish because it makes it easier let your fish go with out having your hooks getting stuck in the net.

20" X 23" TEARDROP SPORTSMAN TANGLE-FREE RUBBER LANDING NET - Sportsman (Rubber) - Sportsman Series - Nets Frabill Store (http://www.frabill.com/landing-nets/sportsman-series-nets/sportsman-rubber-nets/3063.html) This is an inexpensive net that is really good for C&R. It is my personal favorite a tad bit more expensive than the one from cabela’s but far more easy to maneuver in the water.

B.T.W. I have landed an 11lb pound mack with this net.

I was just talking with a couple sniffers tonight on our way home from a skunk. I need to get into some trout fishing. But not just trout fishing. I mean like, "hiking out in the woods and fishing streams and rivers, sorry but your powerbait soaking method just ain't gonna cut it" trout fishing. Pretty much like those 2 reports. I think I'm gonna plan a day trip somewhere. Maybe the south fork if I can burn....er.....find it :stirthepot:

nice fish man!!! next time you see me please say hi! i hate finding trash on the river too:/ i carry all my stuff back and pick up stray beer cans when i have the room in my pack.. i've caught trout on kastmasters, blue foxes and jerkbaits but i still sometimes have to resort to worms to get em. i wish i didn't have to:/ maybe we can go to a spot a little upstream from where you've seen me and you can show me how to use them more effectively? cool fish, pictures and report! hope to see you out there sometime

p.s. i love your trout jerkbait! it matches the blue spotting on the side of the trout in this part of the s.f. very cool man, super impressed!

I dont really post much but read your posts all the time from south fork american river, and have gone up there a couple times in the last couple weeks to try it myself...Ive been fishing from lotus park all the way to past the sutters mill bridge and have had some decent actions on smaller 10-12 inch rainbows drifting worms and kastmasters/small spinners and also had a 10+ bass try to take a trout from me as i was reeling it in....and my brother in law caught one small 7-8in brown, but im very optimistic especially after seeing this post that there are some nice ones in there! Nice job on the PB's maybe one day i'll run into ya out there! Im gonna go tomorrow will post results

nice! the south fork's a gold mine for trout. the 10+ inch bass you saw was probably a squaw if it was up that far (past Lotus). their mouths look similar to that of a bass and they have a dark stripe on the side, which also somewhat resembles a bass. you usually can find them in shallow stagnant bodies of water next to riffles as they hang out in the shallows feeding on juvenile trout. that's cool you've been having such great luck, hope to see you out there sometime!

haha i don't know dude, i'm pretty positive it was a squaw fish; but i guess we'll have to agree to disagree. bass, especially largemouth, would HATE it up there; waaay too cold. check out the pic of my squaw in the latest south fork post. i'm sure that thing was around 6-8 pounds. i've caught a 5 lb bass before and the last squaw i caught was much bigger and seemed heavier. in the water, a squaw looks like a lengthy bass.

well whatever it was it was big and hungry....went on thursday though, caught 12 trout and 2 sqawfish but NO BROWNS! water was lower than the other times i was there so had try a few different holes. I tried rapalas and spinners w no luck at all, caught a few on kastmasters and lots drifting worms biggest fish was a 15 in. rainbow i caught in a riffle right above coloma resort bridge. Also fished greenwood creek access and only got 2 sqawfish and 1 small rainbow, but theres some deep holes and looks like it can be good very early.

well whatever it was it was big and hungry....

haha :) just got back this afternoon and C & R 2 rainbows drifting worms with a kastmaster as a flasher; missed about 12 hits though. (i got some new circle hooks and the angle on the point is causing more misses than the other kind i bought a week ago). one of the fish i missed was a bigger brown. i saw it go for my worm about 7 feet in front of me but the circle hook popped out it's mouth. all in all, a good day on the river :)

p.s. CAL916BEAR we should meet up sometime and do some trout fishin. PM me next time your gonna go out if interested..
