I went to Lyons for the first time since JwG and I have been talking about it. It is only about 60 miles from my house to the lake shore and figured I would give it a go since I have been itching to get out. I called my dad and he was willing to explore the waters with me.

We got there about 7 AM and walked down to the dam to check out the scene. The lake was to the brim according to the water lever sign on the damn that said, "High Water Line". The view of the water at the dam was gorgeous and the pic doesn't do the scene justice.

After checking out that area we decided to walk back towards the parking area and look for fishing spots. With the water line up the the trees we knew we wouldn't be fishing side by side but rather looking for gaps we could cast out of. Here was my spot of choice.

My dad set up then I went a bit further up and did the same. The lines were wet around 7:15 and I put one pole out with PE on it and tried throwing an assortment of lures around to see if I could entice a bite. Never was able to get any kind of lure bite on so after getting some very lite nibbles on the PE I put one rod out with yellow glitter PB with a power worm to see what I could do. Got about 4 bites by 9:30 then convinced my dad to move over closer to my area since he had only one bite.

Then it turned on. From about 10 until noon the bites got real active. We sometimes had fish on at the same time but it was common to be getting one pole out or tying something when the other rod started dancing. Most fish were on the small side around the 11 inch mark (planters). My dad and I managed some nice ones and my biggest of the day was around the 18" mark

My dad's fish came off of a combo of one white and one orange PE mine were some of the yellow PB and some off my orange PEs. I caught somewhere around 12 to 14 fish and my dad around 12 or so. We had trouble getting to our lunches since the bite was so hot for a bit. Here is dad bringing in the trout.

I have to say I felt sorry for some people. Across the cove from me was the picnic/parking lot area with about 7 or so peeps. They kept asking each other (spread out) if anyone was doing any good. I could hear them talking and saying, "Nope, just a couple of bites. But that guy over there is catching a lot." All I can say is I'm glad they couldn't see my dad's position. They would of seen us catch over two dozen fish. :yahoo:

A great day on the water with pops and always nice to have a successful day on unfamiliar water.

RideNfish, nice report and nice pictures. You are wise to fish with your dad as much as you can. I miss fishing with my dad, but I have many, many great memories. Thanks, Brojo.

The angling prowess of RideNfish strikes fear in the heart of his prey as the 'highwayman' continues to slay ‘em.

Great pictures and report! That dam shot is cool and the lake looks so tranquil.

It is a good thing you took your beach wear. LOL. That 18” ‘er is a nice fish and I doubt a recent planter.

It is always nice to be able to fish close to home, catch decent fish and to get into a hot bite where you can't even eat your lunch!

Thanks for the honorable mention. You know I wish I was there, but I am also glad you and your dad got some good times in together fishing.

Nice fish and awesome pictures!! father son fishing trips are the best, especially when the action's as good as it was for you :) next time (and for everyone else reading this) PLEASE fish below the dam for a little bit. some of the biggest fish are found in the deep, immediate pools right below a dam.

Thanks JwG and Dirty530,

I would of liked to fish below the damn but it was a long way down there and didn't want to leave my dad behind to do it. It would of been a bit much for him climbing out of there. That water below did look tempting.

Maybe JwG and I could tackle it and report back :)

My folks had friends that lived near there in Miwuk Village (late 50's or early 60's). We used to go there once a year. My folks and their friends would fish for trout and headed to a little cove nearby where i would catch perch almost every cast. It really got me into fishing. Nice memories. I'm sure you'l; treasure your trip with your dad!

You're right Cadman, great time with dad.

Thanks C-Weed, I like the good reports vs the skunkers :)
