Lured by the promise of warm sunshine my wife and I fled the fog bound valley to hunt for holdover rainbows at New Melones. With a small boat, we could only visit one area of the reservoir in a day. I resisted the urge to head for Horseshoe Bend and points upstream and instead headed for the coves and channels of the northwest corner. We did not find holdover heaven but we were not completely skunked either. Three of the 15 or so fish hooked were holdovers. Most of the fish were caught trolling Needlefish or xr-6 Rapalas 30 inches behind 3/8 ounce Kastmasters as dodgers, on top, in shallow coves and along shorelines with more gradual slopes.
Near the end of the day a heavy hit turned out to be a green trout.

Good job. I will be trolling for the first time at that lake on Friday. Got invited by schatgun here on the forum and can't wait. It will be nice to give up the banking for a day.

clean fishes, even the green trout. you don't see fish that clean here out on the east delta.

My friend, a bass fisherman, identified it as such. It was gently released.
