The moon being just past full is not an optimal time to fish the shore at Pyramid but the weather being so nice I couldn't resist. ;)

Arrived at Block House at 0630. The temp was in the low 20s the sky clear and a slight morning chop from the south. The shore was crowded by the time the sun came up. As I feared the fishing was very slow. Only saw a few fish caught. By 1100 I began to worry about getting my first skunk of the year at BH. Fortunately shortly there after I caught my first fish. Big Dewy who had been fishing a couple of beaches north dropped by. He had caught 4 fish so far and promptly caught another nice fish. Awhile later I moved to the point and caught a fat and beautiful buck. Made my day. Also making me reconsider using 6# test. :-/ Fishing was slow but it turned out to be a good day. Nice fishing with you as always Duane. Thanks for netting the fish. Hope you got a few more after I left.

Great report and beautiful fish. Is the buck the same species you usually catch at Pyramid but just a male?

Yes. It is a little larger mature male and most likely will spawn in the spring. The large older males will turn nearly completely red.

Also, don't be worrying about heavier test. worry about how good your tensioner is. the hook may rip out with more strain on that trouts mouth. In my opinion, your better off with that fish running with your line.

I have a Shimano 4000 with a very good drag. However drags get tighter in colder weather so I have to keep checking the tension as the temps change. A just right drag in the morning may be too loose in the afternoon. Cutts have tough large mouths and the hooks are barbless. The hook is more likely to fall out then tear out. You have to keep the pressure on.

Definately slower than last week. Need a little more weather and a little less wind.

CC I hit pyramid today. I caught one on my second cast. I should have believed you when you said it was bad luck. 15 people on the beach including myself didnt catch a damn thing for the rest of the day.

CC I find myself constantly playing with the tentioner. I was actually looking at that same reel as my next set up. i had a shimano as my back up and it took a **** on me recently. very good reels and reasonable prices.
