Well I made reservations at San Leandro Marina Inn for fri-sat-sun. I have never been there before, however, the Double Tree at Berkley Marina was full.

Plan on fishing for butts and sharks sat. and sun. and just wondering if anyone else is going to be out?

I'm working on adjusting my schedule so I can be off on Saturday to try for 7gill. If you like PM me your number and we can communicate a strategy and try different places on the water and if one of us finds then we'll call the other over???

Zack, if I can get the wife to go along I may head over that way. I need a little time in the salt before the halibut fest. If things are a little slower this evening I will give you a call. Good luck!!

When I get there friday evening, I did not know if it would be a waste of time to try and catch bait fish around the marina. I can use a pole or a throw net.

Any comments or ideas to help?

check your pm Zack.

Thanks,
Rodney

Has anyone tried to float bait at mid depth, for 7 gill? Using a balloon as a bobber. Every aquarium that I have been to leapords are normally on the bottom and the 7 gill are always swimming mid depth.

Just a thought. I would fish 3 poles on the bottom this weekend and float one mid depth.

Ivan,

I fished OP to the birdcage till the afternoon. I kept catching small ones and did not want to leave, thinking the next one would be legal. by the time I headed up towards Angel Is. and went under the bay bridge the wind and chop was really bad. I tried you on 68, but with no answer.

So how did you and zack do? any 7-gill?

I am heading to the boat to give it another try right now.

No 7gills for us >:( We gave it a good try with no success. I did manage to hook up a huge sting ray about 80lb or so. Good luck out there.

Today we still got a lot of little ones, however, four keepers to 34 1/2" made it to the boat. My two year old son also boated his first ever butt. all fish were caught between OP and the bird cage . We left the marina at 0800hrs and ran to OP. I trolled a flasher followed by 2 hochies that was followed by a two day old anchovy. steady action for us all day, but most of the other boats were not picking up anything. we kept makeing a circle *all day until 1400hrs, and kept picking up fish.

The 34" fish is the first butt I have ever had, that made a run like a sturgeon/bat ray. When I grabbed the pole out of the rod holder it made a long run, that was fast, hard, and caused me to burn my thumb on the spool.

Nice pics , guys.
Keciga1, like the hat ;)

If that ray was approaching the 80# mark then I have underestimated the size of Mr. H's ray. The wings on his went out about another foot on either side.Maybe 100#?? Mine must have been around 50#.

Hey Ivan, how deep were you guys fishing in?

Hey Ivan, how deep were you guys fishing in?

Man,
we gave it a good shot! 1st stop was a couple hundred yards off of Angel Island on the Alcatraz side on a drop off that fell from 40 to 75 feet. We threw out a ventilated 5 gallon bucket full of chum off of stern and stayed for the 1st couple of hours of the incoming for nada. Next we saw a boat drifting bait for butts off of the SW side of the Island in a place that I have caught lots of quality fish over the years. We then decided to brake from shark fishing and changed gears and put away the heavy stuff and went light while drifting tray bait for halibut for nada. I then moved to Sausalito and drifted bait there for zip! The guys looked beat so I figured they would like to catch something and did a little pre season rock fishing on some of the bays shallow reefs. After We caught a couple of nice ones and released them we got the skunk of the boat and headed for Yellow Bluff. Anchored up in 150 feet of water and refilled our chum bucket but this time we did not tie it off of stern but instead hooked it up to my anchor chain and sent it down on a now out going tide. After around two hours of nothingness we decided a move was in order and hit another spot in around 100 feet in the general area and sent the chum bucket and anchor down. A couple of hours later Ivan stuck his ray and I had enough shark fishing for the day and took the guys out of the gate around 3pm. Took a few drifts along the coast for nothing and decided to take the long ride back to Berkeley.

I will try 7 gill again but it may be a little while possibly in the fall. I would like to find them either out the gate, or in the bay due to I am not a big south bay fan. I sometime fish there for Halibut but don't go much further then the rock wall. That place is a little too industrial looking for me and I enjoy the beauty and relaxing effects the central bay has.

In closing I really wish we had someone here that is an experienced, knowledgeable 7 gill fishermen to share info with and shorten the learning curve on my part. In all this time I have posted here I can only remember seeing one giant boated. :-/

ZACK!

PS. please don't make fun of Ivan's wardrobe. His head dress is a traditional fishing hat that was hand woven and sent with him as an infant by his ancestors in Croatia to give him good luck in the new world....

This is a traditional South Bay hat, worn only by a chosen few 8-) ;D

So you're the one I've been seeing wearing that thing. LOL J/K. Mike we fished from 70-150ft of water. I got the hat at OPS. Works really good as I was the only one at the end of the day that didn't look like a racoon.

Nice report guys, Better luck next time for the seven gill. When I spoke to the lady from Fury sportfishing last year she said, that the end of summer before the rains, was the best time for 7 gills around yellow bluff. We picked up a ray also:
