OK guys Need some help here, the downrigger I had for J has a problem!!
It won't release the spool to freewheel(let cable out),no matter what you do with clutch handle it won't release,it's a manual so I figured no biggie it's froze or adj.to tight, took it apart an the clutch set up looks nothing like what Scotty shows on their web site, there's no place for braking pads or anything,it appears it may have been spring operated??Yes it is a Scotty, all I can figure is it's really old,any body out there familiar with this set up..appears to be an 1085 strongarm..Thanks ..Don...>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>PS yes I know it's the trout board<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Did you try WD-40---------- Duct Tape--------- Bailing war-------------- Dunno just shooting ideas out :massagetherapist026LOL no but would have if it would of helped, problem is the round locking plate won't disengage when you release the brake lever,it appears a spring/s would make it work right,I was hoping someone had an old Scotty with the same set up,the newer Scotties 1995 & up use a new an improved set up,might even be able to upgrade this on,parts involved would only cost about 25 bucks if that....Don

I had a problem that sounds similar. I wrote SCOTTY an EMAIL and they sent me the parts for free. It works great now.

I have an old Scotty here are some pictures
This is the downrigger

This one shows the red brake handle. Notice the part that is cut out (broken) They replaced it with a black handle and brake shoes. An entirely different system.

This one shows the bracket that the downrigger slide into. They replaced the white brake release too.

I don't have a picture of it after repairs, but it works great now.

Thanks Joe,the top spool looks the same with the clear bubble top for the counter an the red clutch handle looks the same with a round base where it butt's up to the spool, but the rest is all diff.the base that goes against the red clutch handle is completely diff.Could be because this DR has a 30" full size boom etc.also the part that is broken on your clutch handle where the hole is doesn't exist on this one,it's smooth all the way around.
Thanks for trying to help..I owe ya one....Don
