Mr. Hammer! It's still a bit early in the bay for halibut and striper. I usually start hitting up berkeley pier early may, but who knows if you're hardcore enough to stay out there i'm sure you can pick up something. there's always something on the pier ;). good luck!

well i want to catch something if im going to fish all night and then work all day it better be worth it lol

04-14-2007, 03:03 PM
hahaha! yup i do know what you're talking about. i've actually called in sick a few times just because i wanted to fish longer ;). anyhow the halibuts i've seen caught on the pier is only during the day. i've spoken with people that fished all night and most of them got skunked.

I went out last night before the rains.. managed 10 rays and one thornback between the two of us... couldn't catch any smelts or shiners for the stripes and halis. at least the rays kept us busy....

04-14-2007, 03:56 PM
what were you using??? any big rays

04-14-2007, 05:00 PM
I just went yesterday for low tide. I had 2 bites one went under the bridge and the other just snapped before i got to it. I think both were rays. nothing else. i saw a guy with a good size stripper, he said he got it on frozen anchovies but i dont know why but i think he was lying. O yea i caught my fish on frozen anchovies too.
it was really windy. had no other bites after the first 20 mins.

thanks i ended up not going tell next weekend soo hope it gets better if any of you go out post your report please i see alot of people out there using 2 poles is it legal or something????????lol i never heard of it but i seen everyone using 2 poles last time i was out there

04-14-2007, 11:20 PM
Yea, 2 poles are legal from the Pier. Not from shore. You also don't need a fishing license on the Pier unless you take the fish on to shore to land it ;) I like the seats on that Pier at night...They have a little wind block and can hold your pole 8-)

04-15-2007, 07:28 PM
Be careful sitting on those benchs, lost of weird stuff sometimes hidden back there, so do the smell test first, yeah if you want bat rays and sharks its going well, not many legal+ loes but losts and lots of rays...don't tell anyone but I got my first striper last week at the pier 12".

Good luck, I'm the weird guy in Camo, usually lounging on a folding chair, give a holler if you ever head that way...not much bait around the pier right now, that's the biggest problem for me, just wait for the smelt to start showing their faces then its on!

04-15-2007, 07:41 PM
thanks do you fish there alot any big rays 80+ yet have you seen anyone throw a throw net anything?

04-15-2007, 08:24 PM
Yeah, I live real close to that spot, among other great places along that section, but yeah, I have caught countless rays over 50#, and seen some real rediculous large rays, lots of smaller ones right now, between 10-20#'s, the throw net action's been real slow, but you can find some shiner perch, occasionally, I get most of my bait fish in the marina in emeryville, buy you need a fishing license.

The pier rats, me included beleive that the bait will start to come soon, and with it the predators, hopefully after graduation, I can start to think about buying my boat, then its on, fishing with the big boys.

thanks have you caught any 7 gills there or heard of any going to try and make it down there next weekend sometime friday or saturday night

04-16-2007, 12:38 PM
You can throw a cast net out to catch bait fish. I agree with master baiter....the seats on the pier is nice to keep the winds away but the bad thing about them is that most, if not all smell like urine. EWWWW!!!

04-16-2007, 01:44 PM
stayed most of the night out there 1 evening last year, and there is no way in hell i would sit in those seats.they were all drenched in urin.stunk so bad. :(

04-16-2007, 01:49 PM
you didnt catch anything i always bring custom chairs with wind breaking covers never try to sit in those lol

04-16-2007, 05:54 PM
hahaha! yeah those seats are pretty bad. as for fishing, i drove down there during my lunch this afternoon to check out the scene but it didn't seem like anyone had caught anything. >:(

you know what they say. "patience is a virtue to success" -confucious ;)

04-16-2007, 06:10 PM
im going to try and make it down there next weekend one of the nights and pull a all nighter

04-16-2007, 07:44 PM
Went today, nothing up and down the pier, though I was the only one, so i put my second rod in the truck ,and worked the pier up and down with a swim bait for fun, nothing, but nothing, even the guys looking for rays, nothing, good tide too...hmmmm?

04-16-2007, 11:21 PM
If you're really interested in sting ray, the Alameda beach offers a great opportunity for you to hook up with really big ones. Anchovies work really well there. BTW, gotta do it on high tide. Also, there are occasions when a school of stripers roam through there chasing anchovies and things like that ;).

04-17-2007, 12:23 AM
you going to fish next weekend?

04-17-2007, 03:20 PM
I'm going to try to hit up the pier to test out the early run, but with finals right around the corner i'm not sure yet.
