I hit one my favorite honey hole lakes recently with my car topper. I did pretty good, but at Salt Springs it's almost always more like catching then fishing. Nothing huge but some steady fishing for quailty sized WILD trout is always fun! F-13 rapalas were the hot ticket! I got about a dozen browns and rainbows all WILD and released!!! 8-) I took Tiger Creek road, as I wasn't to sure if Ellis road was still open after this last storm which had put some snow higher up in elevation. There was a landslide on Ellis as well, but it was fixed last time I was there. The gates maybe locked though now on Ellis. I didnt't bother to check. I will next time. ;-) Theres a bunch guys on sniffer who want to go with me soon to Salt and we will most likly do a duel report!!

Here is good link to check ahead of time or you can always call and ask them at the ranger station.

Salt Springs is pretty big. Would launching a float tube at the dam be practical? Or is the action mostly far up lake?

I've driven Ellis Rd. How much time did it take from Tiger Creek Afterbay to get to the dam?

Have you had any luck in the river downstream of the dam?

Thanks in advance for any info. And the great post.

Awesome report as always way to go! Camped out there last night and fished all day today. Didnt do nearly as good as you we did manage 4 between me and my bro. The inflatable kayak was way to wobbly to take out so we were just bank maggots today. Bro caught one 16 inches. Nothing else to big. We were mainly rockin cd-9 and cd-11. Cant wait to hit it with a boat! Beautiful country out there absolutely love it.

Really ? Salt Springs is Tough fishing and if the OTTER is in there ... eeeeeee , or the Water is Down then YOU HAVE DRAG YOUR BOAT and MOTOR and GEAR DOWN and BACK UP 200 Yard Down Over Boulders and Rocks to get to the Water after Lifting over the Dam. BOWMAN LAKE is BETTER or Should I Say Awesome for GIANT BROWNS !!! Released a Ten Pound Brown for the Biggest , and Netted 7 BROWNS !!! 2 to 10 Pounds !! Stampede reservoir is also VERY NICE for BIG Browns... but BOWMAN LAKE IS KING !!! Within the Last 20 Days 8 Browns from 7 to 13 Pounds Have been Netted in Bowman Lake. See you Out there in the Field !! :yikes: gst

First time I fished salt springs was in 1968, My brother and I loved that place...in those days we always tipped all our lures with corn. We had a 12 foot alum and it still felt like it was made of lead coming back up over the dam at the end of the day. Watch out for the wind... Had times when it blew so hard that little lake looked like a ocean. Never forget the first time there, we stayed till closing time at the Buckhorn bar then drove back to salt springs...on the way out the next day we didn't know if we where on the right road or not...then my brother spotted throwup on the side of the road with beer nuts in it that I had been eating the night before so we made it out. Never ate beer nut again.

Have you ever considered a sit-on-top kayak? Fairly cheap, lightweight, and very versatile.

Weather pending, I'm hoping to take my yak and hit SS for the fist time in a couple weeks.
