BassBoy and I decide to go fart around at a local lake not knowing what to expect. There have been trout caught there in the past and it was planted this year but not what I would consider a trout lake. The dang thing is shallow and gets bathtub warm in the summer. My dad and I caught some nice ones there in the spring back in 2005 but that was the last time I had been there. What got me thinking about this lake again was our member Jeep Thing posted some pics of a couple of nice trout that he caught there on worms last week.

So BB and I got to the lake at 07:30 not making it a serious "gotta get there early" trout trip. We figured since it is so close that we would give it until 1:00pm and call it a day. We both put out a bait rod and started throwing things. I was throwing a purple wooly and he was mixing up different Rapalas. In no time BB says he has a fish on and just then it spits the hook. Looked like a nice holdover for sure. It is real easy to tell in this lake cause the holdovers are a dark color and you immediately can tell as soon as you see the fish. Then in another cast he gets hit again and lands what appears to be a nice 15" planter.

I then to proceed to loose two fish on the wooly. One of which was a holdover and the other I wasn't certain about. I kept throwing that thing for no action for quite sometime. A bit later I see my indicator move on my bait rod that had a worm/mallow on and landed a 11 or 12" planter that wasn't picture worthy but at least we both had the skunk off.

I had bought some new flies to throw behind a water bobber and decided to throw them. They are a bee imitation. I got them for a couple of lakes I have seen bees floating on the water in the spring from all of the orchards and hives. I could see them on this lake too so decided to go for it. Not to much later and I get a good hit and I fight him for just a bit before he comes off. BB could see it and we were both let down since it looked like a nice fish. Then in a couple more cast I landed a planter that I didn't bother with a pic. Your standard planter but still a bunch of fun catching them this way. I start working the bee again and "Bam" another fish on. We could tell right away this was a good fish. BB started saying as it got closer that he was willing to swim for it since I lost that last one. I just let the fish tire a bit and BB put one foot in the water and made sure this beauty came ashore. I think he was more desperate to get that fish in than me. A real nice 20" maybe a bit more. Real nice holdover and just good proportions. NICE FISH (to me anyway)

Look close and you can see the bee in it's mouth. The next pic is him next to my rod and the cork on my pole is just under 15". If he was lined up to the rod he had a good 5 or 6 inches on that cork.

We fished for quite a bit more with no action. We moved down to fish a bit deeper spot and BB went back to throwing a firetiger Rap again. He lost another fish or two then landed another trout (planter size). Then on the next cast or maybe two he has another fish on. As it comes to the surface fighting hard we see it ain't no trout :)

We now are at about the time to head home. Maybe 15 min or so and we see BB's bait rod take a jump. He grabs the rod and landed this nice 16" trout that was dropping eggs so got her back in the water quickly. Nice fish.

That's it! Just a few fish from somewhere we weren't serious about. I can't even believe I'm writing a report. Fully intended not to actually since it was a trip to just fart around. So we went home totally happy with our results and fish. Might have to work a whole day there sometime before the water warms up.

:cheers1:

Wow another great post,an fish porn to boot, sounds like BB is one dedicated netter, willing to get wet an all.
Gotta admit that place is the last one I would ever dream of fishing at,I remember posts from way back about how bad it was.
Congrats on a good day Doug an BB,an it figures he just had to get a green carp!!!....Don

Awesome!! Sometimes low expectations make for the most fun results!!

This is good to know; still a few months before the water heats up
and both bass and trout can be had now !

Question... any small boats out there..or is it too shallow to
safely navigate..

Thx! TP

TP, it can be done safely if you don't zoom around and just troll. All the duck blinds are gone so there is room to maneuver. Plus all the tweaker trash won't show up for another couple months. Come on down and i'll help you all I can.

First off It was total to see the quailty type fish we seen today. I would have blow it off completely if not for today.

Green carp, lol :) what do you expect my first name is Bass. Fiertiger CD3 was king for me today.

Woodward is actually a decent bass lake but she's like the ugly girlfriend, you don't take friends to see her, hehe.

Nice one guys.

Looks like you had a great time out there today. http://www.fishsniffer.com/images/icons/icon14.png

Good job on the mixed bag BB, so cool about fishing a lake like that. :worm:

With gas prices doing the sky rocket these local lakes are the ticket. You donít have to go far to get some quality fishing sometimes.

Thanks for posting the thread RnF, good pics and report.
Looks like this lake is a little beauty in the back yard after all. LOL :gorgeous:

congrats! those are some CLEAN fish. look at that bass! clean water = clean fish.

@RideNfish: if any of the fish in the pics were recent planters, they would've had me fooled! they might have been holdovers that haven't spawned yet.. i've caught dime bright wild trout before that looked very similar. pretty fish regardless of being a planter, holdover, wild

@BB: were you burning those crankbaits or reeling them in at a medium pace? curious what rhythm was working for you. can't believe those tiny trebles held that bass!

Man some of those trout looked like they came from a river. Great report, gotta love trying a place close to home and catching fish.

Sweet, good job guys. A buddy at work swears about that lake and some of the nice trout he catches. Never fished it, hunted it one year. Might have to get the boat out and long line some wooleys. Great pictures and report, hope it warms up a little Fri- Sat

Hey Dirty530,
You have a point I didn't consider. Maybe these are spawning wild fish. Of course I mean wild by self reproducing. Tulloch lake feeds that lake and it has some nice trout so maybe.... The last fish that BB caught poured eggs out when we landed here. A lot of roe. Hmmm
Thanks,
Doug

@dirty530
Just using a regular speed with a twitch here and there.

@Duckman
Rapala CD3 firetiger was the ticket for me, all my fish came it. If your going shoot me a pm and i'll give ya what I know about Woodward.

These fish would not touch bait(berkley powerbait products) only live worms. I told the trout that shot all her eggs out sorry :( not my intention. She swam away safley.

I am excited to go try Woodward now. Never heard anything good about it from people in Oakdale, but now I am going to try. My wife would love if I only drove to Woodward to fish and so would my wallet. Thanks for the update.

I have never been there but if its shallow and "bathwater" warm in the summer its not likely to have "holdovers"?? Still nice fish holdover or not.

They are probally just nice looking stockers. Because that lake gets warm and its shallow. In winter it gets low!

Plenty of nice hold overs, cold water all summer from inlet, just wish it was not so ugly, only 15 min. from home.

if those fish can migrate up the lakes feeder stream, that's where they would be when the water gets hot. trout need oxygen and when the water warms up, holding next to riffles can support trout even in warmer waters. you should try out the feeder stream close to april/may/jun...
