So after years of wanting to get off the party barges and having a boat I felt would be safe and comfortable on nice days I decided this would be the year i finally get out into the ocean on my own for salmon. Started gearing up during the late winter as I wanted to be ready to pick my day after the opener whenever the seas permitted. Went to a few seminars while i geared up and just tried to gather as much intel as I possibly could feeling a bit overwhelmed by the whole idea but I was determined to make it happen!
Watched the weather all weekend and Today definetly looked like the day to give it a go. Was able to convince the Mrs that this wasnt a suicide mission and after some influence she gladly volunteered to join in on the adventure!
We left San Jose at at 0430 and made it to Moss about 0545 with quite a few boats already in the lot but no lines yet. We launched in near zero visibility fog but luckily there was plenty of boats to follow out lol!
Earlier in the weekend i decided i would start out at "the notch" instead of following the fleet west of Soquel.

(the ride out)
We just followed the GPS and looked out for crab pots in the fog on our way!

(running in the fog)
Got lines in the water about 0630 and while we were setting up guys on the Radio already were heading in with limits so that really had our hopes up!

(approaching the fleet)
Stuck with what i had heard and what had been reported, put down a blue hootchie and dodger on one rod and Watermelon apex on the other around 40' OTW. Didnt take long and we had a taker on the apex which i farmed right next to the boat! Damn! Reset and made another pass when the hootchie went off and it was Stephs turn and bam pops off right at the boat again. Excited and a little frustrated we turned around and made another pass and bam we get a instantaneus double creating pure insanity on the boat and somehow we land them both and just like that we got twin 28in salmon in the box by 0830!

(woot woot)
After some celebration we got reset and turned around. about 20 minutes later we get #3 on ice and start looking for the Devil Fish! I honestly could not believe it! I told the guys earlier in the week I would be happy if we just landed one fish today and here it was not even 0900 and we were looking for the last fish to fill our limit!

(our 150qt cooler fillin up)
The next hour we hooked about 7 fish farmin half and the ones we landed were just barely shakers!
Finally around 1015 i hook up and Steph nets the Devil fish a nice fat 26 inch keeper!! Thrilled beyond belief at 1030 we were headed back for Moss after a beautiful morning!

Talked to Khan out there and he was doing well while the moochers were reporting a tough bite. 70% of our fish came on the watermelon apex while the blue hootchie did the rest of the damage. We never changed those two set ups all day!
Goin to fire up the grill, slam some brew and put these salmon steaks on, thanks again!!

Until next time...

John

DUDE... I'm jealous. So much so that I just told my buddy that we have got to get out there this week. Check your PM. I have a couple questions for you and I don't want to hijack your thread. Awesome day!

how big is your boat and how did it handle the swell?

I have a 19ft fiberglass Center Console Deep V Bay Stealth. It handled the 4' west swell with no problem just dont expect to go full throttle out there.
