mooching. the first spot we stopped withing 2 minutes fish were on. they do a hell of a job putting u on fish. we were lucky enough to be by the wheel house to listen to the radio and i guess one of the other boats theres first stop limited the whole boat out in under 30 minutes. that would have been crazy! but the nice thing is once u limit out u get to keep fishing to help the rest of the boat get there limit. the only part i was not ready for was the hour and a half boat ride out to the fishing spot. it was nice at the begining but after ur legs get tired and u sit down u feel everywave. i cant wait to do it again next year.

I was out the next day (Sunday) on the boat operated by Chris' Sportfishing, also located on Old Fisherman's Wharf. Got there at 4:45 and the place was already full of people.

Anyways, we didn't get the wide open bite as the Saturday group but we scratched out near limits (49 for 26 people). However, the early morning bite was definitely hotter than later in the day. We also lost quite a few before they could be netted; otherwise, we could have limits easily and been home early (one guy lost at least 5 and he was not happy). I ended up landing 3 salmon, and gave one to my buddy who got skunked. He was able to take a couple of charity fish home, so it wasn't a total loss.

Went out with Randy's on Tuesday 4/24....the bite was not so hot. 2 hour ride to the first spot, only 3 fish, 1 keeper. Moved around bunch of times for fish here and there. Don't recall the final count, but I'd say about 25 fish maybe for about 30 people. Only a couple people got limits, some got 1, and lots of skunk for others. My buddy and I managed to get 1 bite each and luckily we landed those suckers, so we were happy we weren't part of the skunk. From the chatter on the dock that morning, the bite was off the hook the previous days just as the OP mentioned. After being gutted and cleaned, our fish weighed in at 8.7 and 8.3lbs.

Great crew and all, but I kind of felt like the captain didn't really try very hard to put us on more fish. There were 2-3 spots where we chilled for an hour each with 0 bites, and everyone was wondering why we were just sitting there with no action. Especially the last spot, we were sitting there for over an hour with no bites and then at 1:30, they said to reel em in and that we're heading back. I'm sure those that got skunked were feeling pretty bummed about heading in so early.

Baseman, heres the thing " stick and stay, make it pay" in other words you only catch with lines in the water! I've worked on charter boats since 1979, and I've seen Capts run all over hell and back looking, while a boat that stayed put had better luck. On this particular day, was the boat you fished the only one who didn't do as well, or were other boats coming in with similar catches? The boat ended up with better than a fish to the rod, didn't they? Considering we had crappy fishing in 2007, no season in 2008-2009, a poor season in 2010, and only a fair year last year, aren't we doing pretty well, considering?

Another thing Bassman, I re read your post above several times in detail.......it doesn't all add up! You yourself say that you moved around to a bunch of spots for a "fish or two" which would suggest that early on in the day the Capt did a lot of running around to locate fish, yet didn't have much success, correct? When running all over the ocean didn't pan out, the skipper later on chose to stick to certain areas longer, in other words he changed strategy, when his earlier approach didn't work, correct? Now, let's talk about your timeline! I assume the boat left the dock at 6am? You said you ran two hours before dropping lines in, that's 8 am! So you guys kept picking up and running for a fish or two a bunch of times, okay let's just assume you fished 20-30 minutes each time, then picked up and ran 10-20 minutes while searching! "A bunch of times, probably takes you to noon or 12:30? Now you say the Capt stopped 2-3 times for an hour or more, in fact the last stop was over an hour? Hmmm, I'd have to say that would put the time closer to 3pm or even later......since I've fished salmon on party boats for over 30 years, both as angler and deckhand, I'm fairly familiar with how most of these guys fish, and how much time they will give a spot before picking up! In your own words, it sounds like the Capt worked damned hard to find you guys fish!

I was on the same boat...Randy's Chubasco. Best capt out there. $45 via travelzoo on April 23rd. We had 55 salmon with 35 anglers. The bite was super hot for that 1st hour. More than half of our fish was caught then. 4 of us had 7 to take home. 9-14 lb range.

I'm going again July 18th. The bite is supposed to be hot. Crossing fingers.
