In a word..... ugly. >:( Very warm weather over the previous week had brought river levels up. Yesterday and today the weather had cooled and there is rain and snow rising water levels even further. The E. Carson is now running at record levels for this date and is off color. The west Carson is running near 600 CFS and is a complete blow out in the canyon. At the bridges in the Hope Valley it is flooding and is the color of Nestles Quick. The campground at Turtle Rock is open and the road up to Blue Lakes remains closed. The weather in Hope Valley this morning was wind, rain and snow. The snow was not sticking. There was chain controls over Carson Pass this morning but the road is now clear. Tomorrow things will be drying out and the forecast for the weekend is for excellent weather. Don't know how much flows will moderate. I'll be up there anyway. Here are some pictures.

ill be up there. going to camp saturday night. i will be at the highway 89/88 bridge 45 mins before sunrise saturday morning. i have been fishing opening day up there for over 20 years straight. last got my biggest rainbow in the east fork at 9 lbs. water conditions arent great so hopefully that will put off the "fair weather" or "fair condition" fisherman.

Great pictures and info, thanks!

Has anyone tried drifting crawlers in the current in these areas or is that unheard of? I think my father used to fish this area by drifting bait. How do you all tackle trout in these streams?

i drift nightcrawlers or salmon eggs with a 3/8 ounce splitshot and about 16" leader. just enough weight to catch here and there but still drift when you want it to. it will be more weight this year though with higher water levels. i could be wrong but last year the water wasnt this high and it was a great year and the year before the water was high and it wasnt that great. i guess i am spoiled though cause 2 years ago when it wasnt great i still caught some nice fish. just not c&r on like a handful of 3 lbers and 10+ 5 lbers and a few 6 to 7. some years it is epic up there. last year being one

Right on, thanks. My dad said he would do it weightless sometimes but I was thinking a small splitshot would work well too. I will have to get out there and learn the technique!

Can someone explain the deal with "the opener"? I'm familiar with the regulations that don't allow the use of bait during the winter, but for example the East Carson is listed on the DFG website as "open year round for barbless artificial lures only" and a limit of 0. Am I confused? Are you talking the Nevada side when drifting crawlers?

The section of the East Carson Below Hangman's Bridge down to the Nevada border is a wild trout fishery. It is open all year with a limit of zero (0) and barbless hooks only. The rest of the East Fork of the Carson up to Carson Falls and the entire West Carson are open during the general trout season (last Saturday in April to November 15th) with general fishing rules.

Rivers are running high. good news is we stocked about 1500 pounds of trophy trout on wendsday. We spread them out between the East and West fork of the carson river. Lots of very nice large fish. California fish and game has also been planting the area so there will be lots of fish to be caught. If you do come up to enjoy the fishing make sure to stop in and see the new Woodfords station it is under new ownership and has some really good food and supplies. Also stop in and say hello to Todd at the East Fork Resort. Hope to see everyone in town for the Fishing. We will also have the annual Eastern Alpine Fire and Rescue Pancake breakfast at the Woodfords fire house. We will be serving breakfast starting at 7:00 and will go till we run out of food or people. The fire house is located on Diamond Valley Road right off Hwy 89/4 between woodfords and markleeville.

Thanks for the pictures. The water appears super high. But the fish are "when and where you catch 'em." Fish on!

The weather has turned nice with cold mornings and warm afternoons. The W. Carson has fallen to more acceptable levels and the bite is hot at ICR. May be an excellent weekend.

This is very good news!

Wish I could join y'all, have not met enough Sniffers... I've usually kept pretty much to myself in the past, except for Rosie - but I'll have to make an effort to be a little more social this year, now that I'm slowing down (:-P)
Opening day on the Carson seems to be a great place and time for that, but I'll have to catchya later. (:-[
Save a few for Rosie to chase, please!
