Stockerfest is the time when we as fishermen celebrate and give thanks to the men and women who work in fish hatcheries, both public and private, to keep our lakes and rivers stocked with trout. For me Stockerfest is the 3 days prior to Memorial Day weekend. What better way to celebrate this than to sample the fruit of their effort.

Wednesday 05/23 - Headed up on 88 with Jetspray to see what's available. Our first stop was Red Lake. Unfortunately Red remains dead. No sign of any trout. No sign of the large schools of minnows that fed these fish. Our next stop was Hope Valley. We fished here a little while for the few skittish LCT that swam at the foot of the pool. They weren't willing to play. On the way back down to the Carson Valley we checked the usual places but didn't see any indication of recent stocks.

Thursday 5/24 - My wife and I had just returned from a shopping trip to Costco when I got a call from Marinpaul saying that his sources told him that there was to be a stock on the Carson Thursday afternoon. I was on the road in 15 minutes. Stopped first up at Hope Valley and killed some time watching an elderly gentleman trying to get the LCT to bite. He had no more success than Dave and I had the prior day. Next down to the 88 bridge where the only action was a painter capturing the local scenery in water colors. Arrived at the 89 bridge around 1320 and on a hunch decided to fish awhile. My guess was rewarded at 1330 by the arrival of the Alpine County DFG who dumped a load of trout right in front of me. These were nice rainbows from stocker size to over 3#. I fished for an hour and a half and got 9 with 4 in the 3# class. I decided I would be back up Friday early.

Friday 05/25 - Arrived at the 89 bridge at 0620 to find Atavuss getting ready to go. The temps were in the upper 20s with wind and snow flurries. What would Memorial Day weekend be in the Eastern Sierra without snow, right? Ed and I fished for the most part below the bridge and managed to get 5 trout between us. Nothing big but beautiful rainbows. Marinpaul was also on the river with son Jake. Ed and I moved to the Upper W. Carson to fish a beaver pond. The LCT were there but uninterested. Dave, Ed, Paul, Jake it was nice fishing with you again. Linda it was nice seeing you. Not a lot of trout this fest and not much size but as usual it was wonderful. Happy Memorial Day all.

not as big as last year CC but at least theres fish finally. it was slim pickings last week. i fished all the bridges and only caught two fish all day. but i did notice two groups of LCT that looked like they were still spawning or on their redds. kinda late unless LCT spawn later than rainbows or browns. just wondering if you or anyone else noticed this.

Bad *ss report! And you have some very big cojones for braving the elements!

I did not know that fish were literally dumped from buckets, especially from on top of the 89 bridge! Anyone know how many fish DFG normally puts in at a given time?

I know I can always count on a great report CC! Thanks for keeping us up to date on how goes the W. Carson! I was going to head up there today but the weather looked brutal. I instead fished a foothills pond and landed 64 bass and 6 bluegill. Much shorter drive too not that the W. Carson isn't worth the drive. Maybe get up there sometime next week! Leave some for me!

Gold Lake is around 6,400 ft elevation while Red Lake is 8,200 Ft.

Great report as always, CC! Jake and I fished all day in the snow on Friday, as well as Saturday morning. It was absolutely gorgeous and the snow kept the holiday crowds in the Bay Area. We fished the West Carson, East Carson and Markleeville Creek. Our efforts were rewarded with lots of planters and quite a few Alpine County fish as well. All fish were caught and released. Here are a few that we caught, the last one being a nice Cutt:

Although we really enjoyed fishing in the snow, we are ready for the lower flows and summer weather! Happy Memorial Day to all.

Good one, Ride-n-Fish! Of course I really just recycle photos from past seasons and pretend I caught them recently . . . . We saw a motorcycle fisherman but I didn't get a good enough look to see if it might have been you. The offer to join us on a trip to the Carson is still open.

Best,

Marinpaul
