finally today was the first time me, my wife, along with ALL of our kids made it out to the eastern side of the sierra's to fish the west carson river when we arrived 10am. there was a big number of LCT at the 88/89 bridge, so we tried everything in the box for the 1st hour to no avail until i pulled out the smallest fly i have in the box. right then and there i was able to hook into 5 LCTs within 1 hour.

...so after 1230 or so we left to Caples and had our take at the lake... no bites, no nothing... and we left at 230pm to make our way home back to stockton. it was a fun trip to see all my kids actually enjoy a day outdoors... it really humbles me.

Sweet!! I love seeing families taking a car trip together to go fishing. Hope Valley is such a special place, and to enjoy it with your family is the best. Thanks for sharing!

Good stuff James. I have fished that area for over 20 years easily. Used to be my domain in the summer months to get away from it all. That was ruined, but the scenery and enjoying time with the family is still there at least. Really bummed about Caples, catching there used to be so easy, and that was way before the numerous posts per week. Didn't need the reports, just went up there to relax and smell that fresh mountain clean air. Catching was just the icing on the cake so say. :) Keep at it, and congrats to you and the wife. Will stop by and say hi one of these days, we fish some common areas.

Way to be JV!!!! Lovely family (and growing) you got there.

The smallest fly can be the bomb when the hatch is right. Obviously that is what they wanted. One of my largest trout came on a size 20 copper John. Couldn't believe that tiny tiny hook stayed in with a fat 5+ lbs. All I did was lift the fly off his jaw when I netted him. :)

Cheers mate!

James thank you for the update. I wonder if they will stock those big fish they had stocked last year. Beautiful scenery up there.

Nice report - I hit the 88 bridge today and managed three little cutts ranging from ~7-10" all on a s16 unweighted pheasant tail under an indicator. I probably missed a dozen other strikes because I suck :duh: The upstream side of the bridge appears to be loaded right now.

Hey James, nice to see you and the family making it out on a fishing trip! Glad you did not get the skunk at the West Carson River. I've fished Caples Lake a few times and have seen some pretty nice lunkers swimming around that place. Can't wait to hit up Amador in the fall. Hope to see you there again.

Fishon!
