Our boat (3 fishermen) managed 4 buts yesterday including one 15# that placed second in the CS derby.
We pre-fished on Friday for 3, two at around 12# (29 - 30 inches)..
All caught trolling herring/dodger with 8-10 oz for a dropper.
All fish caught in 18-20 ft of water.

Many of the boats I spoke with yesterday @ Berkeley Marina had a tough time. There's some boats catching fish but I don't think it's wide open yet. Ours came in 8' of water just off the southhampton shoal. Heard there were a few also caught around alcatraz.

The bay has been very good to me lately. I am a serious obsessive fisher though. I'll grind it out at spots until i make something happen, use the most expensive gear and electronics, spend a week before researching the tides at certain locations, the tides for that location 4-7 days prior, researching wind and what time what amount of wind, what direction. I set up a game plan many days ahead but the final game plan happens the day before, and then when i hit the water, i stick to that game plan unless weather conditions force me to go with another game plan, which I have already thought of just in case that happens.

It is said 10% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish.

It doesn't hurt to have a friend who has been fishing the bay and ocean for a living for 25+ years either. :p

That is amazing...WOW. a lot of quality fishermen in that event, 17 says a lot. agreed, that is NOT a good bite in the bay.

Fished out of Berkley on Saturday, 3 guys on the boat not realizing it was derby day. started at Angel with several other boats for no bites, tried around Alcatraz for more of the same. Decided to head out the gate got a short Ling on the first drift, then a quality starfish, finally good pull down and my buddy gets a 30 plus pounder in the boat around noon. A few more drifts for nothing and headed in to a very bumpy bay. Very slow day, but the big butt made it worth the trip, and he even shared some meat with us

I've been hearing some big butts being pulled out of the bay this year in the 20-30lb range, I haven't heard news like that in years. Hope to see them start biting more. 30lb. that is a nice one!
