For more than 30 years I have been driving up and down the Sacramento River Canyon looking at the river thinking "there's got to be some big fish down there." I got a last minute chance for some extra days off and I will be headed up there either this evening or early tomorrow morning. Siskiyoufisherman any advice on what is working up there and the general areas will be much appreciated. I am not much good with a fly rod but I do have a good 5 weight that will be making the trip along with my spinning rods. Hopefully starting tomorrow evening I will be able to update with photos.

Check with these guys...very friendly and helpful. Stop in when you're there and they'll set you up. If nymphing, use enough wt to get your bugs DOWN. Check your pms.

Hello, Dunsmuir is a good choice. Everything is working right now. A good choice is any type of spinner, splitshot/night crawler combo, and for flies Ted Fay Fly Shop in down town can set you up with the weekly fly. Just about every eddie and tail out has fish, and behind every large rock. Pick up the free map in town just about anywhere, it will show fishing access, parking and restrooms. Good spots are along the City Park/Botanicle Gardens, all the way to and under the hwy. 5 bridge. Its worth it to explore the river through the south side of town (there are some big fish there but a little more work to get to the holes) The fish are tight to the bottom but come up to spinners. Good luck and have fun!!

B-RAN A couple of sniffers came up to fish last two weeks bringing there West Carson style of fishing and tore it up here, so I'm thinking just the same. In fact I have changed up too.

Nice! I knew it wasnt too much of a difference haha I will most DEFINENTLY make that trip ASAP! Going to just hike through some good holes and eat some lunch, is there any good camping in that area?

B Ran,
I don't know if you saw these reports by Marin Paul and I very recently. He camped up there but I stayed in a hotel so can't help you on the camping sites.

As always, the trade for friendly help is you have to post report and pics when you get back :-)

Castle Crags campground is in S. Dunsmuir and has nice water flowing through it and is kind of primitive. Here are the Crags.

B-Ran, we tent-camped at the Railroad Park Resort. Here is the link: Rail Road Park Resort (http://www.rrpark.com/) Campsite #37 was on the creek and fairly flat. Have fun!

I was out on the river with not even a bite when I hear my name, I looked up river and there was Talon with a fish on. We met up and headed down river. 3rd cast and he hooked a native with a perfect lip hook to be released for another day. A couple of casts later he hooked a nice one. It took off to the bottom then ran upstream between two boulders that had some swift water rushing between them and I thought it was all over then. It went to the next pool upstream then back into the white water. He landed it and I think if it was not for the circle type hook that went all the way through the lip it would of been gone. What a nice guy to fish with and although no fish for me I enjoyed the company and had fun.
