Re: someone explain the steelhead card

Well now youíre getting into politics and water wars and they rarely have a basis in science and/or logic.

Re: someone explain the steelhead card

I donít think itís that simple...not like a bad run equals more smolts the following year. Itís more of an aggregate looking at trend lines to determine what might happen in the future.

Re: someone explain the steelhead card

Bios use the data to estimate the overall health of the run, wild vs hatchery, and number of harvested fish. Why would someone lie? Like any other data set analysis, garbage in = garbage out. If...

Re: is this a steelhead or what???

Looks like a sea-run Cutty to me but depends on where it was caught. Could be an oddly colored resident rainbow.
  5. Re: Sacramento Bee Article on American River Native Salmon

I'm not sure I would go as far as to say this offers some hope for the future. The root causes of the dwindling fish runs have not been addressed (dams/access to spawning habitat, water diversions,...

Re: First time trolling - spinning reel?

Dude - no one is saying you’re wrong. Go back and re-read your earlier post (#28). You asked “what makes you say that?” when I said baitcasters are more user friendly than spinning reels for...

Re: First time trolling - spinning reel?

A few reasons I say that: (1) if all you are doing is pushing a button to release line, backlash is not an issue. Make sure to keep your thumb on the spool and feather the line out. Much easier to...

    Re: Final season tally

I guess it depends on what you are comparing it to. If you are comparing this season to the last 2 to 3 seasons, it was about average. Compared to the early 2000’s, it was terrible. I found fish, but...

    Re: any steelhead yet???

sNs is onto something with water temp being a factor on run timing for Salmon - I remember several years ago just before this last drought - we had high cold flows in the AR in Sept and we were...

    Re: any steelhead yet???

Thereís got to be more to it than that, as the Salmon follow the same pattern - Sac up by Redding sees the first fish followed closely by the Feather, then the AR. Seems like the fish that have the...

    Re: Sacramento Area

No offense meant by the stats Mark1 - I thought others may find it interesting like I do. Personally I don't think there are any truly "wild" fish left - those genes were diluted decades ago. What we...

    Re: Sacramento Area

DFW only clips 20-25% of Salmon on the Sac and it’s tribs, while they clip 100% of the Steelhead. So...if you catch a Salmon with its adipose in tact, its likely part of the 75% of the hatchery...

Re: First time trolling - spinning reel?

Spinning reel will work fine. Youíll prob want to upgrade at some point as baitcasters are more user friendly for trolling but spinning will work fine in the meantime.

    Re: Moon phases and tides

Often wondered the same thing myself but not sure we'll ever have an answer. Too many other variables like water flows, barometric pressure, water temp, etc.
  17. Re: Video of sac salmon breaking lamiglas rod

Just for sake of discussion (and in defense of the OP), a well built spinning rod won’t break even if you fish it upside down with a casting reel on it. That’s not why it broke. As far as the fish...
  18. Re: Video of sac salmon breaking lamiglas rod

Yeah the X11ís seem to have issues. Probably good you switched to something different. Another good option for under 100 bucks is the Shimano Clarus.
  19. Re: Video of sac salmon breaking lamiglas rod

    Was it an X11?
  20. Re: Does Anyone Still "Taiil" Fish Instead of Netting?

I do! When bank fishing I think itís much easier to lead fish into shallows, grab gently by tail, pop the hook and turn them loose. Easier on the fish too - they stay in the water the whole time. Try...

Re: American River Gravel and High flows

Re: American River Gravel and High flows

Seriously dude? You know better than that - I've seen you out there plenty of times. You must be having a bad day. Not being to the river in a 48 hour stretch is a far cry from not fishing it.

Re: American River Gravel and High flows

River went up to 7200 cfs yesterday. Still there this morning. Would be great if it was intentional (i.e. pulse flows).
