Re: Preferred REEL for ocean/bay salmon fishing

I would recommend the Daiwa Sealine line counter reels if you are on a budget. The Daiwa Sealine series have been very good to me. I bought 2 Daiwa Sealine SL-X20SHA's and 2 SL-X30SHA's in the late 80's and I am still using them today for salmon and striped bass. I take them on my long range fishing trips out of San Diego and have caught a 40lb bluefin tuna with the SL-X30SHA. The are not in the same class an AVET SX with respect to drag, but they are a pleasure to fish with. I am currently using two Sealine SG17's for striped bass trolling, live bait drifting, salmon trolling and light rock cod fishing. It's a little small for salmon trolling, the SG27 size would be better suited, but I am going with what I have.

I wouldn't either but if someone had a budget to stick to then you are a little limited as to what you can buy.

I highly enjoy fishing with mine. I could never go back to using a penn.

I think the two speed reels are a little overkill (for what I fish for ). I would recommend a single speed reel for salmon/sturgeon/striper. For under 120$ I would maybe look at the shimano on eBay or get a Penn reel. Those old Penn reels are pretty bulletproof and affordable

I really like lever drags for downrigger fishing. makes it a breeze putting you line down. i still use my shimano TDL 5's and 10's. They don't make them any longer but they can be found on ebay from time to time. i recently sent mine to shimano and had new drag washers and had it serviced. Good as new.

the next best thing IMHO is the shimano charter special. it is a level wind AND a lever drag.

    This is a 2000. I would get the smaller 1000. $129

Re: Preferred REEL for ocean/bay salmon fishing

I thank you one and all. A true plethora of information. I would like to stay under $125.00 so th Avet and Release reels are out. I won't be fishing that hard and do hope to hit it about every other weekend. Again, within 4 or 5 miles of shore and in the larger bays.

Looks like the AG 6600 series will be in my boat.

    Thanks so much to everyone.

No they're all gone. Sold my accurates, MXJs online and then sold my SX to Kris. I may have a buddy selling his avets here in the near future. If he does I'll hit you up
