Re: 2017 TOHATSU 6 HP MFS6CS Kicker First Report

I’ve got this motor on my clackacraft drift boat. I’ve also installed it on my 16’ Klamath for trolling. Gets the jobs done. I was told that Tohatsu makes Merc motors up to to 30 hp. So it’s basically a mercury.

I have one of these on my 16' Fishrite driftboat. I have the internal tank model. It is nice and light. Put an extension handle on it so I could control it from the rower's seat. Highly recommend this motor, but the single cylinder does make it a thumper.

Very cool set up. Think I am close to 50 hrs on mine already and it still starts 1 pull and runs like a top. I am for sure getting the Troll master here real soon.

Nice new toy. Please come back when she's got 100 or so hours and let us know how she's doing.

I bought one of these from Cabelas in May, similar price, free shipping.I use it on a 16 foot drift boat, works great. Motors through the frog water. With an internal tank, easy setup. Goes a long time on a tank of gas.

2017 TOHATSU 6 HP MFS6CS Kicker First Report

I am pleased to report today was the first time I have used my new Tohatsu 6hp kicker and it worked great! I got it from onlineoutboards.com for $1349.99 including shipping and it arrived in three days after I ordered it, securely packed and in great shape. These motors are shipped without crankcase oil to prevent leakage during shipping (they do have lower unit gearcase oil though). There are numerous warning sheets and stickers to make sure you fill it with oil before starting it. I filled mine with Shell Rotella T synthetic 5W-40 and it fired right up. Comes with tank, hose with primer bulb and QD fittings on both ends, a rudimentary toolkit, extra spark plug, and manual. I ran it for about 20 minutes in a tank prior to mounting it on my boat's kicker bracket.

I have the EZ-Steer system installed and so I am able to steer the kicker by steering the big motor from the helm. Works great. Started on the third pull after squeezing the primer bulb and pulling the choke knob out. We didn't even fire up the big motor until we were in Middle Bay and decided to try 1/2 hour more trolling at the dam before calling it quits (it would have taken a long time to troll back to the dam with the kicker). The rest of the day we were on the kicker.

I also have the TrollMaster electronic remote speed controller that I have not installed yet. I wanted to make sure the basic functionality of the kicker and steering first, and it passed that test with flying colors. I will install the TrollMaster during the coming week and post an update when I have it in and tested.

The kicker is quiet, and although it is a thumper and there is some vibration, it is not bothersome at all. It is able to push my 16' Klamath Alaskan very easily at any trolling speeds I would want to use (up to 5 mph or so) and the throttle is only open a small amount. We did not check to see how fast it would push the 16 foot boat. Certainly it won't get it on plane, so i think it will reach whatever displacement speed is for that hull.

It seems to be a little jewel of a motor based on the first trial. I intend to always use it for trolling, and I like the peace of mind I get from having a backup motor to get me home should something go wrong with the main motor.
