    Re: Who and Why

And I appreciate it a great deal. One of the best forums on the net and that includes non-fishing forums.
Just a fantastic bunch of people here.

    Thank you, sir.

Who I Am and Why am I Here

I have received a flood of question, comments, and concerns regarding the Sniffer forums recently. Some hate mail, some positive response, and everything in between. So, I just want to take a second lay out my roles and responsibilities and how they impact these forums in general.

First, many of you do not know that I am a full-time member of the Fish Sniffer staff, and have been for 8 years. I am paid for my work here. I am NOT a volunteer Moderator, but that is where I started with the Sniffer more than a decade ago. My job encompasses everything from maintaining our web server and web site, processing online sales and subscriptions, supporting the technical infrastructure that allows all of our employees to work remotely from their homes (we no longer have a physical office), designing and building advertising campaigns for both print and web, and most recently I have developed and implemented the new Digital version of the Magazine we have been offering since August. I also control all of the media outlets we use to grow our community, such as social media, email newsletters, as well as all of the video content we publish regularly.

As for these forums, which is what I really want to address, this platform was completely destroyed when we transitioned to the Scout debacle in 2014-2015. These forums were pretty much lost in cyber space with little to no hope of recreating them. The software was ancient when we disassembled it, the server it lived on was decommissioned soon after we moved to a new service, and this company had minimal interest in trying to revive it simply due to the man hours involved in doing so.

I took it upon myself as a pet project to try to save what I could. Mostly because, like many of you, the wealth of information here has been invaluable to fueling my interest in angling. This board is a staple of west coast fishing and I didn't want to see it just die to the evolution of technology. Fortunately, I have some above average coding and hardware skills (nothing exceptional, simply above average) and was able to not only build a new server, but port most of the old data to a new platform that is stable, fast, efficient, reliable and most importantly functional. This was a huge accomplishment for me personally.

I don't want praise or an award, I just want you guys to understand my personal connection to these forums and why they are important to me. I would feel the same way about them even if no one ever returned to utilize the work that was put into it.

With all of that said, I am simply one person who put forth an effort driven by a small passion to revive this environment. Now that it is back, and all of you have come back to enjoy it, I have ZERO intention of letting it go to waste. I don't pretend to be perfect, and I don't always make the right decisions, and I will make mistakes. My goal for the future of these forums is to provide a place for any one who cares to share their experiences and passions for putting a hook in the water and reeling in a stupid fish. We all have different backgrounds and views on most things, but we also share the desire to outsmart an animal with a brain 1/100,000th of our own for a moment in time. If you want more from this place, then make it more. However, don't loose sight of where it came from and why it still serves us.

That's all. Thank you all for being a part of the Fish Sniffer.
