    Re: Legal or Not?

No intent to release from the get-go....... otherwise, why haul the fish up the levee.....belly hooked and all.

59" Sturgeon weighs approximately 60# depending on abundance of food, i.g., Herring Spawn, etc. Not a Sturgeon fisherman so I am not familiar the nuances of handling a 5' long fish at 60#. Difficult? Doable? I've seen keeper size Sturgeon at the ramps I frequent and folks don't seem to have trouble handling them, etc.

As an aside, I'm not sure sport fishing or fishing in general was ever considered dignified or glamorous in the State of CA to where onlookers are aware that the State's priority is to protect one of its natural resources (renewable)......... Honestly, what those two did is basically what most non-fishing onlookers expect them to do........ catch a fish and take it home to eat!

Fish was snagged in the stomach (it was even said on the video) and not measured properly. Those guys are poachers. Listen to the guy said "let's tag it and get out of here."

Beautiful fish to be poached if that's the case.. There needs to be proper education so that we protect our fisheries to keep them sustainable! It's got to be lack of education for the most part that keeps these acts prevalent.. Lots of folks might not even know any better.. many people come from upbringings where they fish to survive but it's a damn shame.

    Legal or Not?

A lot of sturgeon poaching going on lately, a lot of people are getting busted too. That spot is a well known sturgeon poaching ground, they’re in borrowed time

Hard to say for sure. He looks like he just pulled the tape out to 40" and then guessed that there was less than 20" to the tail. The camera may be fooling us and making it look longer so it may have been obvious to him. I do not think that was their target fish since they were totally unprepared to land it. That said, they did know the regs or they would not have pulled that tape out at all. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say yes, it was legal.

Its tough. I’ve brought home 59 inch sturgeon before though the pictures make them seem oversized. Each one was measured multiple times by multiple people though until everyone concluded they were legal to harvest. Its the pure hastiness of these guys that gets me.

Three of us here say it looks to be at least 65. What do you all think?

In fishing, I throw myself away and find myself again and again.
