It really depends on the hardware that you are pulling that dictates the best speed you should be trolling at. I generally pull speedy shiners and needle fish naked and troll around 2.5 - 2.8mph on the GPS. Making wide turns running a "S" pattern helps too.

The answer will vary from person to person.

My favorite is 1-1.2 mph slow trolling and up to 2.3-2.7 mph faster trolling.

Me too Don, I'm just the jerk on the other end jerking the bait to entice a bite. I like the extra wobble it gives the presentation on the slow side, kind of looks like something to hit...….Jetspray

Grubs: Winter Time. It's 1.3 to 1.5 GPS

Speedy Shiners: Summer Time. It's 2.7 to 3.0 GPS

Re: Whats your favorite trolling speed?

It does depend on your lure, and what you are using to get that lure in the zone. DR's, leadcore, divers of all sorts (they have limits to each), can get you down there but also have a affect. Like hooks said just putting the presentation in the water is the best start you can have...….Jetspray

Re: Whats your favorite trolling speed?

I started with the same response as above, and I agree with the reasons for it. But I can answer it honestly.

My favorite is 3-4 mph. The reason for that is that it means I'm pulling Rapala's for browns, and that's my favorite thing to do. Not that I get to do much of it, but it's an honest way to answer a broad question.

Re: Whats your favorite trolling speed?

What Hooks said is spot on. There is no go to trolling speed. Trolling speed can vary from hour to hour, from day to day and can vary with conditions and times of the year. It also varies with the lure and the set up, using a dodger or sling blade or whatever. Your question can’t be answered as there are too many factors to be considered when determine trolling speed.

Re: Whats your favorite trolling speed?

Depends on the lure. Some don't do well at slower speeds and some don't do well at faster speeds. I check the action of the lure I'm going to use at the side of the boat and vary the speed until the action looks good to me. Also check to see if the lure needs tuning. Then use that speed on your finder.
