Set them in a bowl of water to rest, while I got a large pan full of water to boil them in and use
    the tails for a salad.

When I went to get them, I noticed a lot of small white worms crawling out of the crawfish upper body.........

I boiled the heck out of them and, never tried them again.

The worms are normal for wild crayfish. Those worms clean the exoskeleton of the crayfish. Just do not eat raw or under cooked crayfish since some carry parasites and that is for any crayfish, no matter where you get them.
