I disagree that the spotted bass fights more than the smallie though. I think they are pretty comparable.

Second on the small mouth fight . The second Bass pictured is actually a spotted bass 4 lb (stupid me thought it was a largemouth )and the small mouth was 2 lbs 15 oz and it fought way better but i'm sure that an 8 lb LM fights good but pound for pound its a smallie .

    Re: Smallmouth or Largemouth

Smallmouth do not have a dark horizontal band like the fish in the second pic has, also look at the difference in the jawbone. First pic is a smallie second pic is in fact, a spotted bass.

Seems like this is the year of misidentifying fish. Sure has been a lot of it lately.

Try eating a smallmouth from a fairly high altitude lake....I catch a lot of them in Union Valley for example. I cannot believe how good they are. Completely different than largemouth. Prosser Creek reservoir and the Truckee river also now have a lot of smallies. They were apparently planted there illegally....but since they are there....might as well catch them.
