    New Melones Kids and Camping

Took the kids camping at New Melones over the weekend. Intended to spend most of our time fishing Kokanee but that was a little slow and the kids get bored quick, so after picking up the third spotted bass on Kokanee gear we switched over.

Caught spots and a few large mouth just about every way you can. Trolled shad-raps in 20’ along the bank, Casting Senkos and roboworms and good old night-crawler and bobber in the backs of coves. Also got a couple topwater fish at sunset. Biggest was about a 3 pound largemouth.

Talked with a couple other bass guys and they did well fishing deeper for spots. There were at least 50 boats each morning trolling for Kokanee by the spillway and Rose Island. We got three, some did better, some worse.

Kids much prefer the action of bass fishing. The 5 year old will cast for hours if I’ll let him. They were also fascinated by the carp spawning in the shallows.

Not a lot to brag about numbers or size wise, but the kids had fun and want to go back next weekend. Good option for folks with kids, or people just looking for something that bites.
