Re: A.G. Xavier Becerra, Fishing Groups Sue Westlands over Shasta Dam Raise Plan

Without our water storage system (reservoirs) and our aquifers which were being depleted California would be mostly desert. We need all the storage capacity we can get. The last dam built in California was 40 years ago. Since then our population here has doubled but water storage capacity has not increased. Every suggestion of building another dam and reservoir in California in the last 50 years has been squashed by extremist environmentalists and the leftist kooks in our legislature. After the last couple droughts there was a lot of talk to deal with the water shortage but little has been done. I am an outdoorsman and have been involved with the outdoors and nature my entire life. I consider myself an environmentalist but not an extremist or wacko as we have in many of the environmental groups. I know increasing water storage isn’t our only option to deal with our water shortage in California but it is a critically important one.
Every dam and reservoir proposal is going to meet with resistance and every one will have some effect on the environment and the ecology. We have to weigh the environmental impact against our human needs. The Sierra club use to have the motto - not blind opposition to progress but opposition to blind progress. That has changed. For the Sierra Club and other environmental groups their motto has changed to - blind opposition to all progress.
My personal view regarding increasing the height of Shasta dam and thus increasing storage is that it is a damn good idea. Yes there will be some environmental/ecological impact as with all big projects, and yes it may affect some fish but there are also positive environmental affects from the project. Fish have needs but so do we humans. And we need more water in this state. I hope the Shasta dam project comes to fruition and I hope it is just the beginning of many more water storage projects.

Leaving more water in the river for our fish seems like the best decision.

It would be nice to see both sides of this issue. I have no side as I don't know enough about it, but when I see see the words "California" and "environmentalists" in the same sentence my skeptic hat comes on. I am a lover of the outdoors and fishing but I disagree with a lot of what this state does in the name of protecting the environment.
