Re: It won't turn over PLEASE HELP

The only thing worse than a motor that doesn't run, is one that runs most of the time. Hard to diagnose, and prone to leaving you stranded. Had an oil pressure sensor wire rub up against the block. When it heated up it would melt the wire cover enough to short and blow the fuse. When it cooled off it wouldn't short. First time it happened was on Tahoe and after running out of replacement fuses it was a $300 tow bill. Fortunately, it was a warm day with no wind. Took forever to find the problem.

My 2 cents is take the time to figure out what the issue is, and fix it. It ruins the enjoyment of a day when you're not sure you're going to make it back, and there are times and places when it's a lot more important than just some paddling.

    Good luck.

    Line Stretcher.
I honestly have no idea what the problem was.
I just know that everything works and it starts
now.I think i'm going to just leave things alone
    for now.
But it seems after the bendix gear dropped the
    motor started turning over.
It could have been a corroded wire, loose fuse
    or bad connection some where.

Bob, the Bendix is centrifugal, the Solenoid is just there to handle the current load. The starter will turn if power is applied no matter what position the drive gear is in. My bet is the neutral lock out. However, I cant rule out a bad starter. You can rebuild them, it's pretty easy. Not as easy as just replacing it but not hard.

When i had the motor off i did notice that the bendix gear on
the starter was stuck up in the fly wheel.I turned the fly wheel
slightly and the gear dropped down.Im thinking that this may of had
something to do with it just clicking at the silinoid and not wanting
    to turn over.

I was thinking of the same thing Steve, my kicker motor has had that at one time, I used penetrating oil to lube that handle and never had trouble with it again. I also had the kill switch hook slide slightly forward and did not notice it until I tried to start it up......Jetspray

Then under the dash i went .Checked every fuse and every

I did have to turn the key twice the second time before it would
start. But it runs and im so happy.
I think it would be safe if i replaced the ignition swith.

I'd make sure the battery cables on both end...motor and at the battery are thoroughly clean and making good contact.

Next I'd check the control wiring then cycle the lever back and forth while turning the key to start.

Then I'd check the starter solenoid relay. When mine wouldn't start pinpointed that the relay was the cause.

I would try spraying wd-40 on the starter bendix area while tapping it
with a heavy screwdriver when trying to it over. Had a problem with my
65hp merc the starter bendix was shot.
