    Re: Independence Day Tomales Halibut

I’ve hit Tomales twice this year. First time, it was so slow I left and went up the coast to find some rockfishing off the kayak.

Last week my friend and I went back out, I caught 5 smelt. He landed one 10# halibut off the usual hog island ledge where it starts going to the yellow channel marker. That was it. Saw a guy get one on the troll, but it wasn’t anything major.

Tomales is fun regardless. I always like fishing it knowing that you can run into a sea bass or some good sized stripers.

The time I went and had good action, we had sabikied up some herring. It was hot action with those. Anchovy’s never really worked for us. Smelt are a waiting game, but usually the fish that grabs one of those guys is worth it. Smelt in the 5-8” range are best. The mega ones go back.

Fun place, I also run into quite a few guys who just use bucktails out there. They say the artificial might spark the interest of fish that get jaded on the pin sized anchovies that get pushed in and make the fish lockjaw.

Also, not sure if it’s true, but some dudes swear by only fishing it on the outgoing. They say the incoming flow drops the bay by like 5 degrees.

I used a Sabiki rig with a 1oz weight. Clipped on a Trout rod and reel, cast out then slowly reel in. You'll feel the bait fish hit.

It's been several years ago and only fished for bait once and forgot what we caught...smelt maybe

I enjoyed fishing for bait once in Tomales and wonder if anyone ever fished for bait out in Bodega Bay and harbor?
