That is good to hear. I was planning on washing down the boat today. I think I will also lube the cable linkages under the hood.

For my boat everything is cables, throttle, shifting (forward & reverse), and steering. Nothing between other than the kicker motor which is controlled directionally by a Panther steering plate. Cool to hear that it was something replaceable...…..Jetspray

Did you or someone do an impeller change? If the motor is new to you and is doing this (what you described originally), it might be worth a trip to one of the mechanics people recommend on the boards here.

If you can shift into gear but are lacking throttle, I would say that your shift rod in the lower unit is fine but that you have a cable issue. Taking the cover off the motor and watching the cables as someone cycles the controls my allow you to see if one of the holddowns where the cables are attached to the motor are loose.

OK, this is from a guy that knows next to nothing about these things (me).

I would expect there are instructions on where the shift shaft should be positioned when reinstalling the lower unit (like after doing a impeller swap). On my outboard it says make sure the shift rod is pushed down in full reverse and the gearshift lever should be in R position. Then the shift rod is connected to the upper shift rod.

If this somehow got our of wack, it would be very easy to check.

If this is completely off base, then keep in mind the disclaimer in my first sentence.

Will check and let you know.

    Shift Linkage Problem? (Console)

    **2005 Mercury 4 Stroke 90 hp**

    Hey guys,

Just wanted to get your thoughts on this. Friend has this issue. Shifting the boat into forward throttle (full throttle works) and back into neutral works fine.

Shifting into reverse works but there’s no throttle control, only able to idle speed in reverse. Shifting back into neutral from reverse does not work unless you go all the way to forward and back to neutral.

Summary of Problem - no reverse throttle and having to shift into forward before you can put it into neutral (or else it’ll be stuck in reverse at idle speed).

This sounds like a problem with the shift linkage bolt / alignment at the outboard where the lower unit connects to the outboard.

Could someone confirm that this may be the issue and how to try adjust and fix it?

    Thanks!
