If you drove to Florence lake, the road you used is called the Kaiser Pass Road. The Dusy trail is only for hardcore 4x4 vehicles and starts/ends on top of Kaiser pass.

I used to drive my F in L's two wheel pickup up to Florence to fish once in a while. Mostly bass fished and fished where my cars would take me. Pine Flat and the Kings River. San Joaquin below Millerton there by Friant and lower for trout. Ball Ranch.

When heading up hwy 168 on the way to Shaver lake, you turn right (east) on Dinkey Creek Road to head towards Wishon and Courtright. Staying on 168 will lead one towards Shaver, Huntington, Edison and Florence lakes, all southeast of the main fork of the San Joaquin river. Easiest way to get to Mammoth Pool is by going through North Fork keeping you north of the San Joaquin river. So different areas with different drainage's.

And yes, Mammoth Poll had a fish kill (you can search my previous posts) but the damage affected the rainbow population more than the browns. I will probably start fishing up there next month when the water cools down.
Guess this happens when I'm one of the few on this site that lives in the Central Cal/Fresno area
As a for instance....Frenchmans Lake is 28 miles from my front door and in another state and I consider that "near by".

    If you want to fish....

168 to Kaiser Pass road into Edison and Florence where Jackass Meadows is located.

168 to Dinkey Creek Road into Wishon and Courtright.

You could take Dusy 4X4 trail from Kaiser but I don't recommend it. It's rated hard.

All I'm saying is that sign is/was about 20 miles north of Wishon as the crow flys give or take and to me that's "near by".

California Native Son born and raised in Fresno, Ca. Graduated Clovis Hi(go cougars) two year at Fresno State College(go bulldogs). Left Fresno in 1969 for work in Bay Area.

We used to slay the large mouth bass at the Mendota canal area.

Raisin City Drag Strip is "near by" there.... fun times...I digress

    Re: Wishon 10/26

Back in 1973 I spent my honeymoon for a week there.
Many Jackass Meadows, but not that one.
Near Lake at headwaters of San San Joaquin river
Mammoth Pool Reservoir, Big Browns back then and drained just a couple years ago

    Courtwright is next to Wishon.
