I'm glad you were able to figure it out. Good luck with any other issues that come up.

Re: Evinrude 15HP starter not engaging the flywheel

I found that the previous owner has wire swapped around and splices all over. I reworked everything and it starts. So, the starter was spinning backwards. Now to get it idling normal. Thx for suggestions and help

Sorry I meant “Bendex” gear. Yes it did work but the old battery cable was spliced and finally broke. That’s all I did was replace that old cable. I’m going to clean and lube and try again. Thx

I don’t think it could ever spin in the wrong direction. What I found is the Bender gear in the starter is kind of “gummed up” and not working properly. I removed the starter assy and will update after I clean it up and properly free it up. Thx

Did the starter engage the flywheel before you changed out the cable?

Check if the battery is still good and fully charged. Are the battery cables connected correctly? If not, the starter shaft will spin the wrong direction and not allow the pinion/bendix gear to rise up. Make sure all connection points are clean. Try cleaning and re-lube the starter shaft and pinion/bendix gear, it may just be gunked up.
I'm no expert but those are the things I would check. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in.

Evinrude 15HP starter not engaging the flywheel

I replace the battery cable to the ignition switch and now the starter spins but doesn’t engage the flywheel. Any suggestions?
